Northbridge Dice Pot

Well I am making a dice pot for my northbridge and I just had some questions on what would be the most effective thing to do. I am trying to do this cheaply, so at the moment I have extracted the copper core from an intel stock cooler. I am going to be picking up a mapp gas brazing torch to braze a copper pipe onto the end of the copper core.

So first, what design should I use for surface area? Should I drill holes or attach bb's?

Second, what should I use to braze the copper pipe to the core? Or is there a more effective way of attaching the two items?

And last, how thick of a pipe should I get?

Iv never tried this, but realistically I dont think a NB kicks out enough heat to need anything fancy. Any dry ice action on an NB should do it, just make sure your insulation is good- the cold will probably spread much more than it would for a CPU because of the differences in heatload.

I have seen a couple of NB pots but does it actually give any more stability or ability to OC higher than just a fan right on the heatsink or maybe a liquid block would?

I'm not really sure of what to expect with it, but my team members and I want to try it out and so I am making a cheap pot for it. So does anyone know any of the above answers? Thanks guys

Armaflex tape around the NB heatsink and fill with DICE is cheapest and easiest. If you have to make an actual pot though slap two slide screw rails onto that intel stock cooler base and braze a 2-3 inch tube on top.

1" copper pipe, and a pipe cap. Easy and cheap.

Don't expect it to give you much benefit though, would be easier to just drop a hunk of DI onto the existing heatsink.

ok thanks guys, I don't really know what to expect from this, but all I am going for is 11 more fsb with an E6300 to put that cpu in the top ten. I'll then run a E8400 on this board and see what I can get with it. By the way, does anyone have any links to any volt mods for the Foxconn Mars?

What FSB are you at now?

I only ask because I've yet to put my e6300 under DI... wondering if it's worth the hassle.

I got it to 589 last time I ran it under dice.

If you have already cut out the core I would just get a small section of copper tube and make the whole pot about 6" tall

I dont think it would matter if the pot is sealed up all the way as the heatload is so low you probably wont need to use acetone. And the way our dice was crushed up its like powder anyway.

Im not sure how you would go about mounting this. someone else can probably be more help than me

If we can get that board past 600Mhz We will have alot of fun with the QX9650s and E8400s

Ryan, I was thinkin of freezing the copper core and heating the copper pipe to try and slide it, much like how I removed the core. Then I can braze the outside to prevent leaks.

I've been thinkin about the mounting kit, right now I was thinking of modding the stock heatsink mounting plate and fittings it with threads and a backplate etc. But like you said, the way we had the dice it was crushed enough that it shouldn't matter to much. I think Chris is making one too so it should be interesting to see how he does his.

I'm pretty sure this board will go past 600, I think it was the cpu that limited me last time on this board. I wish I had time to run those 8400's and qx9650 on this board saturday

Wait so how did you remove the core ? you froze it then heated up the aluminum part ?

And after you left you didnt miss much, We had alot of trouble with CPUs walling at low FSBs The X38 isnt the best for high speeds

The core wasn't hard to remove, all I did was put the entire heatsink on a gas stove (used a portable backpacking stove) and then hammered out the copper core using a wooden dowel. It came out really quickly.

Finished up the prototype in about 25 minutes of work in the garage. The worst part was getting the plug out, I easily knocked it out till about 3mm of copper was stuck in the aluminum it I believe I crushed the aluminum around the copper, sealing it. Had to cut it out with the grinder, no problem though. Will test it out tomorrow, too late to setup the cascade and fab something for the mosfets.

I was thinking of sweating the core inside the pipe, and then brazing the outside. Good idea or not? I have everything done except for the brazing. I drilled some holes for surface area etc.

Nice one Chris , If we get some GPU Pots for the next session we will need two people just to keep the pots full :p
