All of those are making me want a DP setup / I don't know if I should spring for it though...

    I also heard about the 1.5v FB-DIMMs from Micron. Hopefully they're DDR2-800...
When I saw this "L5420, Harpertown (aka 4 cores), 2.5Ghz, 1333FSB, TDP 50W, $380", my wife grab my &$^# and asked "mmmm, been looking at p{r}on again?" LOL!

There is lots of talk about High End Workstation versions of the Server Boards that will use plain of DDR2 and DDR2 Reg/ECC. No way you'd want too much Ram without something to regulate it or do error checks to check its integraty. At least that's the way I learned it many years ago.

There was a lot of talk at IDF about dumping FB-DIMMs...

this processor line-up is simlpy awesome, I just wonder why there is no 2,4/2.0ghz 1600mhz fsb part. Those high fsb parts completely rape k10 in everything (so why not release more of them?)

4GHz Yorkfield Intel displayed were only phase change possible and even then not stable about two weeks back. So not much to go off.
I am sure as hell there were already some AC/WC 4ghz yorkfields.. I don't expect the air overclock to be lower than current g0, it was already shown that they perform great under LN2, maybe even better than current core 2 duo.

With such a high FSB, Intel will have to go back to X.5 Multipliers. The first time I heard of 1600MHz FSB, it was for a 3.2GHz Model. That might be the last FSB anyway since Intel will go to Common System Interface next year. One IBM guy said it will start at 2GHz. Oh, its Bitwidth will make it about the same as HT3.0 at 4GHz but that's only rumor.

My main Grrr about FBDIMM is that I can't replace it whenver I want I can get DDR2 anywhere, but FBDIMM.. only a local Supermicro distro (read: wallet-grabber)

Then I might just have simpler needs and a that 2.5GHz Quad Core even at stock would be nice. I have Zero need to two Xeons.

What's he mean by replacing them any time he wants? Is it that much of an inconvenience to order new ones from newegg? And RAM isn't something you swap out all the time.

I live in Serbia, ordering from NewEgg or Mercateo.de is not something I can do any day FBDIMMs are not found everywhere, and they can't be sold here, so I gotta be picky. DDR2 on the other hand is a totally different story.
I don't swap it every day, but if I do decide to swap it... read above.
Speed is a nice bonus of non-FBDIMMs, though

And I actually do need many cores at work.

Ah, now that is a reasonable explanation

Intel soon to come CPU release has got me confused.

I am waiting for CPU upgrade to a top of the line quad, maybe the QX9650 but what about the E5xxx / X5xxx series are they even better?

Looking for the best OC suitable Quad, which are the very best?

Are the ones with the lower power consumption best. For an example the difference between the X5472 and the E5472 is 40 Watt?

Could one imagine that the 80 Watt would clock better, than the 120 Watt?

    Thanks!

5000 series is a dualdocket server chip for LGA771

The boards also hardly OC if any. You want desktop variants or single socket server variants in form of the 3000 series.

It is rather ridiculous. Especially when you can get 2 3.2ghz Harpertowns for $1,400...although that is a high price as well...

Again though, Dual Socket Xeons aren't that wide spread, even in this community. Most of the time one Quad is under used.

Question: Are Socket 775 Penryn's coming out in November this year, or is it January for them?

Hehehe! I hear ya'! I have at least two buddies who agree with you 100%. I never said "all", just most.

Too bad you guys let the Mofo close that other thread but oh well. I had to put off my Quad Core for now because I had to buy the wife 4 new tires and she's taking a trip home to see her mom and deathly ill Aunt. OBTW, that's near Stuttgart Germany. The last part of the budget busting was four new Yokies AVIDS tires that cost me $516 at The Tire Rack, VR 225/50 17's no less Computer stuff just got moved to about Q2 08.

I still might squeese in a Q6600 but that's about it.
