Question Need good oc, cheap 1x1gb stick of DDR2 for DS3

Getting E6300 and DS3, looking at a 1 gig stick so i can add another later for 2gb. I can not afford >$150 for this. Would having one 1gb stick instead of two 512's hinder my overclocking at all? I want to try to hit a 2.8-3.0ghz OC. So that means i need 7x430 for 3.0ghz. What ram can i buy (preferably off zipzoomfly or mwave - no tax) that will run at 860mhz with relatively tight timings for <$150.

    EDIT***

    How about this? http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...ctCode=85025-2

Not likely. In fact, running a configuration with only one DIMM puts a lower load on the memorybus/controller as it has to address less hardware.
This will get you further in clockspeed, but without the benefits of Dual Channel the processor will not have it's desired bandwidth.
The effect of which is less performance.

With that module you will have about a 65% chance of getting Promos ICs, 20% Micron and 15% Infineon unless you know the exact partnumber.
Since you're particularly interested in overclocking I'd advise against that. Overclocking is fun, but it has to get you somewhere...

Quite frankly, what you need is a module with good Micron ICs on it. You could use my RAM List (check my sig) and some Google'ing.
Other than that I wish you good luck finding it within budget. Although prices are high it's not impossible.

how much performance would i lose going with the one stick running single channel versus 2x512 or 2x1gb and running DC?

not much performance loss prolly in order of %5 single channel, but just a guess.
Mushkin HP6400 would probably fit your bill . I got 480 mhz stable 5-5-4-x and 425 or 450(I forget) 5-4-4 stable 2.1v on gigabyte board .
Micron D9 will go higher, but that board doesn't like D9 as well as Asus does . I hear even some of the HP6400 is going >1ghz. Tight timings not quite as important as overall mhz and how you can scale bus. So I wouldn't concentrate so much on tight timings versus getting a matched kit now. Now for $150 your not going to touch 2gb kits, . But you could get a 1gb stick and 99%+ change if you bought another later it would work fine together. I think anandtech just did a review on your board and came to conclusion about micron D9 on that board. I've experienced similar results on my DS3. However my HP6400 is my day to day ram on my #1 game rig sitting with 6300 24/7 at 480, backed off 5-10mhz from max stable orthos/stress prime stable and I could bench at 495mhz .

otherwise if you want d9 then there are a variety of bargain D9's out there such as
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231063
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231087
    etc...
99% of people will tell u to get D9, but not everyone will be at your house giving you tech support when D9 may or may not clock as high as the IC on the HP6400 on the Mushkin. Now I'm not saying I will be either lol, but I'm just giving you my 2cents and experience with gigabyte board and conroe and ddr2 . I have 10+ packs of mem and while this isn't the absolute best kit of mem I have, it IS the best kit of mem I have for THIS board .
    thx

Thanx for the advice bro, I appreciate the detailed response. I'm reconsidering the DS3 in favor of the P5B deluxe, which i can get for about $180. I like the Gskill 1x1gb stick you linked to. Since that is D9, it should work with the P5B better than the DS3. I was also thinking about that Crucial 10th Anniversary 2x1gb kit that I can get for about $245.

    I have a ?

I see the 1x1gb stick of Gskill here:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231063
    Has a model number: F2-6400PHU1-1GBHZ

When I look at the list of DDR2 from here: http://ramlist.ath.cx/ddr2/ I see that there is a listing there that closely matches the one above. The only difference is PHU1 instead of PHU2. Does that mean it might not be the D9? I do understand I'm taking a little bit of a gamble here.

No, that just means it's a single module. The 2 in PHU2 means it's a kit of two.

This RAM looks good for what I'm trying to do:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231099

    1) It's 1.8v and shown to boot nicely with the Asus P5B series.
    2) It's rated at DDR2-800, which means I can run 3.2ghz on my E6400 (8X400),
if my CPU is up to it.
    3) It's cheap
    4) I can upgrade to 2GB later if I want to.

    Opinions, alternatives?

I'd prefer the G.Skill NQ. They are cheaper and also use Micron D9.
