Modding DFI Ultra-D to SLI - question

I took my nb heatsink off and I see no epoxy. I think this means I can mod my board into a SLI board. However, I need to know exactly what to connect here and with what tool.

    Any help appreciated.

use a soft 2b pencil or a conductive pen. Very easy mod to do with 100% success rate as long as the points are bare with no epoxy. Check this link for the one spot needed to enable SLI or the other two spots if you need to enable SATAII support for vanilla NF4.

    http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets...spx?i=2322&p=2

This will show 3 pictures. Ultra D without points connected, SLI-D with points connected so you see the difference and then one with a blob of conductive paint or the other showing it connected. Point is in the upper right portion of the chip by the core. Hope this helps. Please do post back and let us know of your success. Upon next post it should say SLI instead of Ultra-D.

New batch of Ultra-D can't see those two points anymore(just like the upper rectangle showing on the pic below), you need to use very sharp knife to scrach it very carefully until you see those two points(see the lower rectangle and use conductive pen to do it.

    haha, thats great...

they try to stop you, yet you just dig deeper to mod, what they tried to make unmoddable

exactly, but do NOT scratch too much, or the circuit layer will be damaged.

hehe, thats what I thought it was. Is 5% a lot in benchmarks and gaming? well a noticeable difference over running same settings on "real" SLi?

edit - i know i can just work out 5% off Sli Results, but would like some first hand knowledge (if anyone has tested both)

as far I heard and was proved there was ZERO performance difference. The board layout on both is identical as is the bios. All the mod does it allow dual GPU in SLI mode which yes, will net you an increase obviously. The peformance of the board itself should be 1:1 minus variances between every board to the next. Nothing seems to be exact replicas of eachother even within same make and model. My board is unmodded because it is already put together and I don't want to take it apart just to do it however my benching scores and performance are just the same as the next guy with similar parts and setup.

From what I know, the newer batchs of the Ultra chipset has green epoxy on them to stop you from modding it. You just have to exacto knife it carefully.

Correct. My Epoxy was done so horribly I can't even tell what I'm scratching. Ughhh. I best not mess up the board.

BTW, once you draw the line and boot up, it should say SLI-D???

There should be no performance difference between a modded Ultra-D and SLI-D. It's the same chip, just one has the features disabled. When you bootup, turn off the splash screen and it should say nVidia SLI-d detected instead of Ultra-D

And dont forget to use DFI nF4 SLI chipset driver since ultra-d chipset driver won't work in sli mode.

Is there a difference in drivers for the Ultra-D & SLI-D??

Reason why I ask is that I have both boards... An SLI-D (proper) & an Ultra-D (modded to SLI)... I don't see the difference in anything when I do a winBLOWS reinstall...

I still have to use the default Nvidia driver be it 6.53 or 6.66 (6.66 seems to give me loads of troubles so I stick with 6.53)...

Mine had that epoxy stuff as well... Was worried that I was gonna kill it before I even got the chance to boot it up for the first time but alas, everything went okay...

I seem to have a knack for killing hardware, lucky it's my own & not when I repair other ppl's PC's for them...

So, since when was there different drivers for the Ultra-D & SLI-D/DR??
    Cheers,
    Minh

go to the store on the leadtek site. they sell them for around $15-$20. you could prob get one from an electronic supply house for cheaper, take a little more looking around.

    very truly yours,

Hm, I was just wondering. My Ultra-D board, which I bought about 2 months ago, came with an un-original SLi bridge in the package. Is this something DFI has put there, or is it the work of the webshop I bought it from? It's pretty nifty anyway

Probably was an offer from your online shop, mine was ordered in a OC'ing products shop in Netherlands and came with a free bridge, but i haven't done the mod yet .

I bought mine from netshop.no here in Norway. I think I have seen reports from others also getting it in their package from the same shop, so maybe it is an offering from the webshop as BioPC said. I don't really need it as I'm running ATi, but it will come in handy the day I sell the board. Ie, I can mod it and sell it as a SLi compatible board.

lol, i didnÂŽt check the web page for more than a month. They don't give free SLI bridges anymore.
I suppose is due to the new DFI batch with protected points.

    Jammer...

MIght be a bit late to answer, but as far as I remember the first revision of the ultra-d had the sli bridge included because the mod wasnt hard to do. Then nvidia has forbidden dfi to do so..
But as I don't have one of the early DFI boards, I can only say what I read ages ago
