    Question Lapping a Conroe CPU

    I found this guide here:

    http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?t=4735

I have a few questions though...

    1. What do you hold the CPU with? Your fingers?

    2. Do you spray a very small amount of water on the wet/dry sand paper?

    3. What sort of metal polish do you use as a final step?

    4. How do you clean the CPU when you are done? Can-o-air and alcohol?

I would expect you hold it with your fingers on the edge of the PCB

    |3ourne advised against water but if your VERY careful and allow AMPLE drying out time you could get a small amount of water involved

You shouldn't need metal polish - this finish should be achieved by just fine grit sandpaper

Can of air sounds good. And perhaps a careful application of lemon acid

very carefull with liquid? whatever....i downright immerse my CPUs in isopropyl alcohol when i clean mine. there is nothing to short out as long as you ensure they are dry before you run them. extremely simple. cotton swaps (q-tips) are your friends.

I used masking tape along with the black cover that came with the processor to cover up everything but the top of the IHS. I used 800 and 1500 grit paper, on a flat glass surface, with no water. Polish is not needed, the most important step is to get the surface of the CPU completely flat and eliminate the raised surfaces on the outside edges of it.

    Thumbs up

Thx guys! This is definitely my favorite forum on the net!

I will try to post pics when I am finished. Conroe still on order and rev 304 in mail (going to lap the SB, NB and CPU heatsinks too!)

Do you just buy sand paper that specifies that it is safe on metals from like Home Depot?
