    VMware problem

So decided to up my dimes production using vmware... problem... As it was installing, just at the point where it said something about bridging network conections in the install dialog, my machine died and rebooted.!! Now i get this when I try and open up VMplayer. And when i go to reinstall it tells me that its already installed, and there is no Add/remove on the control panel, cos I reckon it rebooted before this was added. How do I proceed from here...
PS: Windows restore was disabled at the time.
For the record.. my MB is Abit IC7 Max3. Maybe this reboot thing would happen again even if I did try to install VMware again . Pissed off now cos I really did want to get more done.

Have you done a search for a *.vmx file ? Once you find that you should be ok. If not you made need to create a new setup.

Yes in my virtual machines, but you never know if he is running the downloaded one that Jeff created and he hid it somewhere else, maybe logged on as a different user when it was downloaded/created and its in a different part of the HDD....

Ya i downloaded from the VmWare site! BTW I also got Parallel workstation up and running anyways. So I might leave VMware alone. Which do you suggest is better VMWare or Paralell WS!?

BTW: I need the one that is most CPU friendly. i do not want this to upset my Rosetta too much, if at all!

not had any experience of parallel, but VMware seems to use 1-2% of my cpu for each instance. doesn't seem much.

Same as Paralell... well me gonna stick with paralell for the time been.Working well so far Although I have noticed that sometimes it gets erroneous and one of the Vm's start eating CPU for no reason... but i delete that one and restart it and things go back to normal.I also notice occasionally that windows seems to allocate a whack load of ram to one of the VM instances...so I maximise all windows then minimise all and the memory normalizes itself...seems to be a windows thing! The memory saved will even allow an extra VM! And also I'd say thanks to a TinyXp I got somewhere

Sometimes its the actual LAN module. If you have a spare nic lying around, plug it in and give a whirl. It may solve your problems.

Ya. Agreed... cos i think this LAN on de olde Abit is a bit dodge. Other diagnostics programs crash with it too! Any ideas Haltech about fixing a borked install of VMplayer. Do i have to take out the scalpel and slash up the registry and delete the folders? Is there a tool that will get rid of it off the system for me, so i can re install afresh?

I had this very problem when I was first installing vmware workstation on my X2. Turned out it was because I had deamon tools v4.0 installed and the two didn't get along... Have you got daemon tools installed by any chance (or any other virtual hdd software)?

I would use Vmware instead if you can.

The other option is to uninstall Dimes on each virtual machine and re-install again.

Well..... see.. I cloned the Vm's AFTER i had installed DIMES on the first original machine. Maybe theres a conflict going on!

Cant see why I clone all of mine. Does the agent shutdown on the non clone ? Delete your clones and start again maybe ? How many do you have ?

I get conflicts if i clone a fully setup vm aswell, only the DIMES client on the first vm would actually produce anything which makes me think it is a DIMES conflict. I instead clone them before i run the DIMES installer and they are fine.

You do realise when you clone that you need to change the computer name and IP address (if static). Otherwise your just wasting your time.

I haven't needed to change the computer name before the only thing i get is a nagging message at every start up of a vm saying the name already exists on network...Would this be hurting my output?

Hmm, I always change, that nag is prolly taking up resources. All I know is in my experience of working on networks, 2 machines or more having the same name is bad news. I would change them and see if your output grows. Also try setting off a ping from the command prompt on each one say ping www.bbc.co.uk -t and then see if either crash out......the -t makes them continue. You never know.

Well.... they are still working... well i think... yes cloning the whole thing already setup and using the same agent name etc i think was causing problems. I was getting error messages in the messages list! They are pinging away nicely.. I have 5 at the moment.

Shouldnt have a problem with the cloning of agents its more the system name and IP that can cause hassle.....but if change you must, then do what you need to get the pointage up and running !

Thanks everyone! Well I might get some pie today if I'm lucky. If not today the next day then... one things for sure, I'm gonna try and get pie everyday! C'mon team... Won't be long now till we are on the home straight for that top spot. We are flanking them with Rosetta and this! Everything seems to be working ok now. Anyone know how to dissolve Agents that ain't working anymore? Or merge them?

Bah.... Have 5 VM's,1 on the host and one on a lappy... so 7. See I can't get UDP to work on the VMs. Just ICMP. I think thats not helping me! Well I am getting another gig of ram in a few weeks. Might get a few more on that. Any ideas on the UPD on Parallels? When I do protocol blocking check the UDP is red. And i notice that it also causes Dimes to exit unexpectly!
