$1200 to spend

building some computers for a lan/cafe, computers need to be able to play games like bf2, cs, maybe fear and the like.

Only thing is the limit is 1200 for EVERYTHING (monitor,os, keyboard etc.....)

just wondering what everyone would get?

Another question? Is it worth getting a x1800xt if the computer has a 3000+ venice and will the venice bottle neck the vid card?

1200 doesn't leave you a whole lot for options...especially if you have to build more than 10 computers or such.

There is a Cafe here where I live, and they just bought a bunch of Dell's for around that price. And hey, it works...it's whatever the kids are willing to pay to use it you know? Since they *don't* have that opportunity for such a thing at home.

My advice to you, do the same...especially if you want cheap stuff that will work. Or start scrounging around trade forums and such and see if you can find good deals on Athlon XP machines.

I have a friend that plays on my CS:S server, and he's running an Athlon XP 2100+, 1GB Corsair Value Memory, a 6800 GT, and everything is fine. It's certainly got down in price, but can help you end up in the right direction if enough revenue is generated you know?

i say you take this to socket a's and o/c all the processors to 2.2 ghz that should be doable with some decent ocz ram ... i'm sure one of the guys here could get you a hook up 6600gt's run pretty good too

your talking about 1200 per? IMO you don't need much.

With some budget RAM and motherboard, a mid-range vid card, 17"LCD and small harddrive a Venice 3200+ or 3500+ should be easy to get. You will be able to play all modern day games and leave you with some upgrade oppurtunity, with pci-e etc. where the older stuff doesnt. Buying AXP's is a bad idea, overclocking them for commercial use is even worse.

I would change the Venice to a 3000 -> 60$ less
Motherboard to anything not so OCable (ASRock)-> around 40-50$ less

If you decide to build the computers yourself you should think about buying items in bulk.

XP PRO OEM 3 PACK - E85-03013 ~$400

Don't buy software from newegg they greatly overcharge. You should be able to find OEM XP discs all over the net for ~$100

You can also contact microsoft directly and let them know that you are a system builder for a business and ask to buy just licenses or see if they will sell you the packs directly at a discount (don't forget to haggle).

Motherboards are another item that would probably be cheaper to buy in bulk.

But remember if you build a PC yourself and it breaks down the Cafe will annoy you to fix it. If buy a DELL PC and it breaks down the Cafe can go bug DELL instead

Good thinking, for some reason i totally over looked that, and i just bought an oem xp pro cd for someone for $69.00, lol.

Its ok if they haggle me, im getting paid to build them, install them, and maintain them.

That and my girlfriend and her dad own/run the cafe.
