    Unhappy Radeon 9700Pro won't run at 200FSB

    I have a Radeon 9700Pro on A7N8X Deluxe with 2100+@2.3G, 1.2x192 FSB Stable.

I also tried 11X200 FSB. I passed both Prime 95 and Memtest86 several hours successfully. However, whenever I try run 3DMarks2001SE, the computer will either hang or reboot itself in the first test, in a matter of few seconds. At 200FSB, it also fails some of the 3D games quickly too.

At 198 FSB, the 3dMarks2001SE and other games passes Okay, no artifacts, everything well.

I locked the AGP Bus to 66Mhz. The computer is stable judging by Prime95 and Memtest86. What is the problem of this 9700Pro?

Do you run dual DDR? If you do, that could be the reason. I had two PC2100 sticks running in dual mode @ 400MHz. Prime95 did just fine, but 3DMark crashed. Maybe the reason for this is that the sticks are underloaded in dual mode, but when AGP-texturing kicks in the memory fail bacause of the load.

I am using three sticks in all three slots. Two Samsung C-TCA0 and one Samsung C-TCB0 @ CAS 2.5-2-2-5. More Relaxed timing won't help also. I will try just one slot later today.

Has anyone run 3DMarks2001SE successfully @200FSB with Dual channel DDR slots populated? What memory you use?

    I run 200 fsb 24/7 with 2 x 256MB Samsung pc2700 (DTM's).
Maybe you need more agp voltage?

Hell i had 2x 512 Corsair 3200 at 2.5 3-6-3 at 220FSB stable in my Abit NF7-S runing my AIW 9700 Pro no probs in 3dmark..

I think its your cooling.. i had to put my own heatsink on that thing to just get it to run at over 180 FSB on my old Abit KX7333 RAID.. I could then run the card at 200FSB plus it was overclocked at 406/346 no heatsinks on the ram.

I know its not runing over 66 now but it may just be overheating since that heatsink totally sucks and really dont touch the core.

The memory is not the issue, I uninstall two sticks, left only one on the MB, still gives me lockups and reboots during 3Dmarks2001 at 200FSB.

I think maybe the heat is the reason. However, I already removed the shim, replace the stock HSF with a TT Crystal Orb, and AS3 several weeks ago. The card is currently clocked at 365/330. Stable at any speed lower than 200FSB.

    Hmm... ??

Probably the ram.. You should go grab memtest www.memtest86.com and install that on a floppy boot the system with that floppy and run all the tests or ya can just cut ot the chase and hit the c key then 2,5 and select test 6 and then test 7. If ya can run both of those tests with both sticks then its not your ram.. If ya get errors then one of your sticks dont like the timings at that speed.

I'll bet anything its the ram.

You prolly need to do the vdd mod.

She'll bench 3d mark to 217 dual channel stable.

I doubt it's the Radeon. Not all A7N8X boards can do 200mhz with stability. It's a hit n miss deal.

I will do further test later on the memory.

BTW, if anyone wonders, I got another A7N8X Deluxe with Nichicon caps, can only post at 192 FSB max, not stable too. The current one can do 200FSB stable (except 3DMarks2001) is with Rubycon caps. So, the caps theory does not hold.

Yes, I also have an A7N8X-D with Rubycon caps that does well over 200fsb stable right out of the box.

Shadco, do you have a link to a VDD mod ? I havent been able to find one for the A7N8X Delux and Uber BIOS does not change VDD voltage as advertised !

I really think its a hit or miss too for the A7N8X at 200fsb, Alot of people have had problems running at 200 or more. I can run it at 200 Async easy, but will not work above 192 in DC Sync. I have tried everything and I mean everything but no change, ordering some XMS 3200LL next week and will go from there, worse case might get another mobo
