Sony made a 24" Widescreen CRT called the FW900. It's a flat aperture grille trinitron. They retailed for around $2,200 when they were still in production and can now be found on ebay and refurb shops for around $400, give or take $100 bucks. The picture on them is beautiful assuming you get one that's in good condition. But I personally sold mine and picked up a refurbed Mitsubishi 2070SB 22" crt (NEC 22" anyone?) , because the mitsu tubes are just that much better than the Sony's. You'll never find the mitsu or it's NEC brother (the one FCG owns) anywhere these days though.

I have two of the mentioned 24" widescreen CRT's (sun model "T-rex")

Also had a 2200nf, but its sold (but not paid for yet).

Unfortunately my 24's have a scratch each and tube is slightly out of line (colors dont line up enough and it bugs me but maybe I was just used to the 2200nf).

All along the watchtower the watchmen watch the eternal return.

Both the Sony and NEC 24" CRTs can be found on ebay from time to time. I would hesitate to buy one though because most are refurb units and when something goes wrong parts can be hard to find and expensive.

I also have an FW900 but rebranded as an HP A7217A,best CRT I've ever had worth every cent.I got it for 335$ shipped on eBay last year.I don't know how to reach my max resolution though but I'll get it one day.

As for a 24" LCD that would be nice....but you'd be stuck with 1600x1800 res...which is a joke for such a big screen imho,as my max is 2304X1440 although no cards support that res at least this unit it future proof .

24" LCDs are 1920*1200. I replaced my 2405FPW with an FW900. That is my primary gaming monitor. It is extremely leet indeed. The blur on a 2405FPW irritates me greatly. Most other bigger panels weren't free of the issue either. Screw it, I knock her down to 1680*1050 @ 100 Hz on my CRT as well if a game is a real bear. Other than that I use 1920*1200 @ 95Hz that I added with powerstrip. I am an FW900 fanboy. No lcd comes close imo. It is unquestionably fantastic. No input lag, no blur, fantastic blacks, flexible with resolutions, redonkulous refresh rates that keep everything so fluid feeling... be an uphill battle for lcd's to do better on technical specs. A big lcd being better for fast paced fps games is just not possible. In my opinion the Sony or HP equivalent are the BEST monitors. Not #2, almost there, or any of that. It's just sick and that's that.

oooh...you did 19x12 at 95HZ? nice I didn't know this baby could do that! did you apply any hacks to the drivers/infs? and can you reach 20x15 res? I can never reach 20x15 for some reason.

Max is 98Hz @ 1920*1200. I never tried to go above 1920*1200 though I know it can go one more jump. Usually a CRTs designated optimal resolution is listed as one it can do at least 85Hz in. You could probably get away with it. Check the specs, it might be 75Hz or so at 21xx res or whatever it is. Anyways, I use powerstrip to do my custom stuff. In the user defined section of the custom res options there are a lot of variables you can tweak. I usually just adjust the x and y lengths (like the 1920*1200) and then change the vertical sync. Just those three. As you change these figures powerstrip adjusts all that other stuff that must only make sense to uber display gurus. It's nice. Much easier to do with Coolbits and Nv cards but powerstrip is not going to keep me from HDR+AA in OBlivion and HQ AF so I deal.

Mine states 75hz at 23x14 I shold be able to pull off 85#20x15 though but I think my ATi card is holding me back,I read ATi disables some resolutions and settings by default.

Makes sense. My biggest motivation to start using powerstrip was to add 1680*1050. My Nv card picked up 1600*1024 as a res, but ATi had nothing in that area at all. So I added 1680*1050 since it seems more standard.

I used to love huge CRTs, but now that I've used a 2005fpw for a year or so I can't stand them anymore, they all seem to flicker now even at high refresh rates.

The viewable area on that Sony FW900 is 482 x 308 mm (19 in x 12 in). Not that big. Is the picture quality that freakin' insane compared to a top notch LCD? The better LCDs have little to no ghosting, so the big complaint can't be ghosting so much. Is it black reproduction?
