The large L2 cache should have a fair amount responsibility of the performance leap in 1Ms

The conroe used in this test has the same amount of L2 cache as the 9xx series dual core CPUs have so that cannot be the reason. Im thinking the reason is the shortend 14 stage pipeline Intel used in Conroe and this made it more efficient per clock than their older CPUs with the longer 31 stage pipeline.

I'm getting Conroe soon as it ships. I will replace my 3500+ with an X2 after their becoming dirt cheap after being made low value by much cheaper and faster Conroes.

    very very very good news...

conroe 2.4Ghz can runing more fast.
I saw even when sys dle, there are 25% cpu_load.
    that's a bios issue.

I believe that... some days later, 2.4ghz stock running can break 19s

You right - this architecure is mostly responsible for this - but having 4MB L2 vs 2MB ( 9XX) helps quite a bit for 1Ms - that's all I wanted to bring across

incorrect, the 900 series has split L2 chache, so SuperPi only gets 2MB, on Conroe it gets all 4MB, or twice as much as any other CPU to date.

also, about that 25% in BIOS, woudl that really affect it that much? cant it just be running on the other core that SuperPi isn't using?

It could be the other way, that it really IS idle, and that the 25% cpu_load is a bug within the os.
