    Mixed Memory...

I'm sure this has been posted somewhere but too hard to try search for it, so here it comes. I have four memory modules of 512MB each. Two are the original G.Skill ZX (as per my sig.) and two are said to be from Kingmax. The two G.Skill modules are both PC3200 while Kingmaxs are PC3700. I tried to insert them on my board with each speed goes to their proper channel. My board went berserk, kept beeping, unable to POST or boot. My guess was my board doesn't allow mixed speed memory even if they are in separate channel. Am I correct or not to assume such? The manual doesn't recommend mixed speed, but it doesn't strictly prohibit it, so I thought I would try, but no luck. So, does this mean I can't mix memory speed at all? TIA for anything you can pour down this poor man's brain.

Edit: Oops, PC3700 is not Kingmax, suppose to be Samsung, sorry.

Do not use SPD. Go in and change your memory timings to match the looser of the 2 sets and see if that works.

Okay, I did some more experiment on my so-called Samsung PC3700 (corrected) (which is based on VData chip), I found out something very weird about this combo. First, I inserted only the Samsung memory into channel one (slot1 and 3). Its timing is set at 2.5-4-4-9 @200 (PC3200) and 2.5-5-5-10 @233 (PC3700). So, I proceeded to set JumperFree Configuration to Manual and set CPU Freq. to 233 and adjust CPU Configuration Max Memclock to DDR466, and set timing to 2.5-5-5-10, Save and Exit. JumperFree Configuration went back to Auto. CPU Configuration's Max Memclock went back to DDR400. It would not save JumperFree Configuration whatsoever if I set the Max Memclock to anything higher than 400. JumperFree Configuration will always go back to Auto no matter what I did. And CPU Configuration's Memory Setting would not save at anything above 400. It doesn't have this problem with the ZX memory (although I've never up the ZX's Max Memclock past 400). I am going against a brick wall.

Furthermore, I tried (mixed memory in dual channel setup with) one stick of my ZX in slot 1 and one stick of Samsung in slot 3, and set timing to the slower of the two, which is 2.5-4-4-9 or 2.5-5-5-10, boots right up, recognize them as Dual channel 400. Put another (any/either) stick in slot 2, boots right up, recognize them as Single channel 400 since they are now three sticks. As soon as I put the fourth stick in slot 4, BEEP....BEEP....BEEP. No POST, no boot. Okay, I think there is something wrong with this board/BIOS. It works fine otherwise when using just two (dual channel) or three sticks (single channel, but has to be in slots 1,2,3, not 1,2,4). Once a stick is in slot4, boom, this board goes berserk. I think it's time to either get 2x1GB sticks if I want more memory. Otherwise, a new board would probably solve this issue as well.

I am guessing that this is on the Mobo listed in your sig A8N-SLI

If so are you set to 1T command rate? If so Try 2T. Check your bios and flash to an updated version if its old/original.

Did you increase memory voltage. I had to to run 4x1gb mixed sticks.

i am guessing its the command rate at 1T though.

Yes, it is the mobo in my sig. I've tried using 2T as well as 1T. The Samsung wouldn't even work with 1T Command in 400, so I tried 2T. That didn't make any difference. I haven't actually tried raising the voltage, though. I might try that and see if it would make any difference.
