I ask my girlfriend to pick the resistences for the mod's on the p5wd2-e premium and at the shop they only have 50kohms ... is there a prob using this one on the droop? Stilt posted a 60khoms needed ...

Check this out. The ultimate pencil mod. Just jam a #2 pencil between Pins 17 and 18 for a 15 millivolt droop. This guy actually did it.LOL

Same here. Found better stability and less heat generated by the MOSFETS if droop was set to 10-20 millivolts. Try a SPi1M run and crank up the FSB till you get rounding errors, then set the droop for 15mv, rounding errors should go away. At least this is what works best on my rig. YMMV

This mod is still not bad for a 5c pencil and a few minutes time

I started modding my mobo today .... prommy soon on the rig

    Already done:
Northbridge and southbridge thermal paste changed,
Northbrigde stock cooler switche by a swiftech MCX159-CU,
    Ramsinks homemade,
Vdroop and reading point on the fly.

    Still missing:
ddr2 vdd mod and mch vdd mod,
cooler that says fanless asus design will be replaced by a home made with a fan or just going to add a fan, dunno yet,
maybe add a fan to the southbridge too.

    Pics:

    more soon

Could someone give me the measuring points for the vdd and mch on the mobo please? Thks in advance

@Vortan.. Nice mods, I would have gone right across pins 3 and 6 of the Richtek chip, less noise

@Hardass... How were the results with the pencil mod... I know a few guys on OCF that did it and they had great results. You might want to put a little nail polish on the pins to hold the pencil lead in.

Something strange happened with mine. I have vcore set at 1.30 in bios and it runs at 1.40 to 1.41. If set at auto in bios it will boot and run at 1.50 to 1.51. Tried removing mod but stays the same.

It is very normal for any Vmod to produce higher voltages. The setting in the BIOS doesn't actually measure the voltage. Just puts out a value to the regulator that is calibrated for the "stock" component values. Most people see a .07 - .1 difference between the setting and "real" voltage.

The weird thing is it stayed the same after you removed the mod. Maybe there is still some graphite between the pins.?

    Hi guys,

Is there a way to do something similar on a P5WD2 Premium (Non -E)?

I managed to do the Bios 30% Overclock with my Pentium D, but I felt no difference. I麓ll try to go further.

I did the pencil mod, and it helped alot, but have since done the VR mod and get a bit better results. I did notice that the Vcore increase about .07 after the mod, and it was already .05-.06 higher then the bios setting, the nice thing about it is Vcore can be increased upto 1.84 with a bios setting of 1.7, now all I need is some extreme cooling, water isnt doing the job anymore.

I made Pencil vdoop mod and it really worked, but now a have 0,1v diference between Bios and CPU-Z (ex: Bios-1,3v / CPU-Z-1,4v).

why can't you use one of the mB fan connectors instead?? In other words instead of having urber soldering skills just mod a female pin for one of the unused MB fan connectors into one of those points with the correct electrical device and be done with it...Although Proth's idea is reasonable with the pencil mod.

Guys, could you tell about the gain you achieved with the Vdroop,MCH and VCore mod ? I have done similar mods to my P4C800-E, but I did not get higher clocks. Only the VDIMM mod was useful, since I use BH-5 memory.

Also for the VDIMM mod, any gains ? I have 2 1 GB sticks of ballistix PC6400, but I didn't get higher clocks/lower timings by raising the VDIMM above 2.25 V...

I am really interested in your experiences, and also would like to compliment the Stilt for finding all of them !

The Vdroop mod only help when you want the absolute most performance from your ASUS mobo. Example would be if you need 1.55v to run stable @ 4.5GHz, you would have to set Vcore @ 1.65 or so to compensate for the droop down to 1.55 when a load is applied, now 1.65 is kinda dangerous to run 24/7.

The Vmch mod usually allowed higher FSB settings but only helps if you are FSB limited and not CPU limited. Although boards vary, any of the P5WD2 series mobos will be stable up to 1500fsb. So it depends on your CPU and multiplier.

The Vdimm mod is obvious in that you usually can run faster and tighter.

The Vcore mod allows higher Vcore voltages than the BIOS allows, so you don't need this mod unles yoy maxed out the voltage setting in your BIOS. NOTE that the Vdroop mod also increases Vcore by about .1v.

On another note, thanks for all the PM from people that did the pencil mod. SO far they worked out for everyone except 1 guy who's mobo wouldn't boot and he removed the mod and all is fine. The only comment I have is remember that the actual CPU voltage setting will be about .1v higher than the BIOS so you may want to lower the setting BEFORE you do the mod, or enter the BIOS the very first time you power up.....If you can, measure the resistance between pins 17 and 18 of the chip, with the pencil IN and power OFF, and check that resistance is above 20 ohms. The original resistance between these 2 pins is about 75k and the pencil should bring it down to 30k... Anything below 75k is good, but 5k may be too low. One guy PMd me about reading only about 1.5 ohms, and I recommended he twist the pencil around until it got to over 20k. I guess the graphite in some pencils have a lower resistance than others.

Thanks for explaining all the mods (I already know the use of them )...

I mean : Have people really improved their overclock by doing these mods ?

e.g. Before the MCH mod I could do 300 FSB, now I can do 320 Mhz FSB
