GPU temps: ATiTool vs. Me and my Polarflo TT

Last night I was doing some testing with my X800GTO @ 540/540 (stock volts) with my Polarflo TT GPU block.

According to ATiTool my GPU core temp was 90 C running their little 3D test prog. GPU Environment temp at that time was reading 50-52 C. Idle for both temps is 40 C.

During the 3D test I felt the water block with my finger and it wasn't even warm. I felt the back of the GPU above the core and there was definitely some heat, but I didn't even come close to burning myself and I could hold my finger there all day. Observation: it couldn't have been running 90 C, even with this wimpy little GPU block. (Yeah, yeah, should have waited another 2 months to get a Maze4.)

My question is, am I insane? Is my assumption that the 90 C reading was BS correct/plausible? Is there anyone else out there getting crazy ATiTool readings with X800GTOs?

    Thank you for any help!

It's really bugging me that it's reading 90 C... I just want to be reassured that I'm not the only person out there that's running into this problem...

    Anyone? Please?

Oh, yeah. I forgot to say that I've already had the block off twice and mounted it tighter with the exact same temperatures.

I think I don't trust those readings, because it doesn't artifact and it's always super-stable. 5 hours of CSS, anyone?

other people seem to be reporting strangely high temps (90+c) on x800 cards in ATiTool...i think it's a bug or something.

Thanks for the reply, Aphex_Tom. That puts my mind at ease a little bit.

ah, if the heatsink itself is really hot, then the core probably is too...weird

keep in mind that 85C is probably hot enough to burn you quickly... it could still be very warm (ie 50 or 60C) and feel really hot, but what do i know
