    Setting up Rosetta@home

    How I did it:
    - Went to here: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/cr...count_form.php
    - Input needed info.
    - Downloaded the BOINC Installer: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php
    - Install it and let it get up to date/etc.
    - When you are asked which project you would like to be attached to, this is the link you should put in the box: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta
    - Downloaded the optimized BOINC files for more performance (*note - you will need to shut down rosetta (boinc manager) to install the updates): http://www.guntec.de/Crunch3r/boincx86.html

**NOTE: When you install it may take time to download workunits if the servers are busy. I suggest setting your buffer to at minimum 0.5 days of work.. mine are currently set at 1.1 days but that may increase after more testing and depending on the servers.

    Extra Info (performance, buffering, etc)

To increase your work Cache go into your R@H pref's here: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/pr...obal&updated=1 and change "Connect to network about every" from 0.1 to what you want. The resulting WU buffer will depend on the performance of your machine.

I have set my client to use no more than 50% of my virtual memory.. is there a way we can bench how this setting changes performance?

Leave applications in memory while preempted? - which setting is optimal for performance?

.. its pretty much that easy You can set your team, user name, etc while doing the first two steps then you just need to put in your user name and pass when you install and its all done.

Add any info you got guys, I just tossed this together in about 4 minutes as a quick guide for those who need it.

    External Monitoring applications:
    BoincView: http://boincview.amanheis.de/

    EDIT(s)
    01/22/06
    Added BoincView

    01/01/06
Added rosetta@home link to put into box to attach to the project.
updated recommended buffer time (0.5 days suggested min).

    12/31/05
optimized BOINC clients are good, disreguard last edit.
changed buffering: buffered wu's are dependant on your machines performance so setting 0.5 doesnt give you 4wu's only.

    12/30/05
    update - "buffer more to 1" gives 7 wu's.
added how to buffer more wu's, testing.
    added vm change
added leaving app in memory while cpu is busy
removed question on how to increase WU cache.

    05/14/06
updated how to install optimized files.

I have posted in the rosetta forums about not all results being credited to our team.

    http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/fo...ead.php?id=829

    Lets see what happens.

I currently have 3 of my machines runnig rosetta, looking good so far.
I have set my preferences to only connect every 3 days and i have about 50 WU's in queue ready to be analyzed. (per machine)

    Credit = 500 so far

does anybody know it rosetta favors tight timings or high bandwidth???
I am thinking it is high bandwidth but i would like to know.

yeah mine worked itself out eventually.

looks good as from what i can see, it'll carry on working on a different section of the project while it's uploading/downloading to and from the server...

(think it works like this as mine started running 2 threads whilst still downloading others)

i have noticed it used 80Mb of ram PER THREAD...

so those people with dual Xeons and even those with dual core processors might want to watch the useage if they use the rig for other things.

Hmmm 80mb for a single core procesor??? Thats doesnt sound too bad. BTW guys, we are the 35th producer in rosetta today alone. Once all the dust clears from this whole DPC incident, we should be higher. I think today I'm gonna help repay our F@H team for a little bit.

at a guess... when it uploads, however often you have it set to upload (see the first post as to how to change preferences) the Total Credit and Average Credit coloumns on the Project tab in the main BOINC manager will be updated.

and when you have work done, as with all good project, it'll be updated on the free-dc stats (dont think theres a link so far to the rosetta ones, so here it is...

You may need to increase the amount of disk space under the general preferences on the rosetta website.

"nh....", you have to go to preferences, at the website and adjust the HDD space allotted.

All I gotta say is you bastages better start cranking 'em out, or you'll never catch us...

I left Rosey to come back to participate in the barbeque, I ( I'm Essee_Ar ) fell from 5th to 12th on my Rosey team. However don't be confused by the low RAC. That is averaged in with my old RAC and factors in roughly 30 days of inactivity. I'll be zooming, better throw some coals on. My last active machine was just switched over.

Take it easy, we are just starting this and only a fraction of our members have come to Rosetta. Wait a month and then come and see

I know, I know. Just being the firestarter I am. I did it with UD at PC911, and Bitbendertech. We went quite a ways up the food chain based from a small computer enthusiast site. We did it at XPC w FaD and went all the way too No. 1, with a small crew. Until we ran into a huge Russian mob. Even then we finished second to only those Russians, after holding them off for a few months.

So, I'm running Rosey, now. Again. Got to get the fires burning white-hot! So, I'm playing. I'm your teammate from D2OL. Those with XS will be back, I'm sure. I will be.

But Rosey is where my crunching future is, and we like to see firey crunchers! w00t!

I have no doubt that XS will climb fast. People will be like WTF did they come from. Too bad we couldn't have something like an "Xtreme Alliance". But I think I know better.

Anyway, best to you all, in all of your future endeavors. Hope to see a bunch in Rosetta.
