    Question Different x1800xt Overclock Method

I just got this Radeon x1800xt and I really like it. Games have never looked so great. I have read the forums and it seems there are a number of ways people are overclocking their cards. I am currently using the Overclock Tool and making changes on the 3D clocks and not the 2D. I disable cli and leave both of the ati2evxx.exe running. When you set the clocks they are not applied until you are in 3D. I have flashed it to the PE bios and so far I can get 749 core and 884 memory with no voltage changes. I am just wondering if this is working as good as some of the other methods. What do you guys think of my scores with the above clocks? Drivers are 5.13 beta.

Is it possible to solder the missing power "component" onto a regular X1800XT ?
Its used on the "PE" cards..
    Everything extra is bad!

What missing power connector from the PE? I have never seen a PE card but was believed it is identical to the XT card but higher clocks in the bios. Do you have comparison pics showing what one card has over the other?

I also wonder what this missing power "component" is? Or are you referring to the external powersupply used on ASUS card?

As far as the OC method posted in the first post goes: that should be working very fine. Those are very good scores for those clockspeeds (Dothan helps there a bit I'd guess ).
The "PE" BIOS increases the 3D mode voltage so there is no need to disable the services and clock in 2D mode by increaseing the 2D voltage.
It should work fine with CLI too, or do you get a problem if CLI is running?

I can only get 770/920 with the PE BIOS (3d clocking, nothing disablet) but i can get 823/1000 with my stock BIOS (2d clocking, ati smart & ati hotkey disablet)

it seems to me that with the PE BIOS, when i set voltage above 1.5 have no effect(DMM shows 1.5v, but can still only go to 770/920 nomatter what volt.but with the good "old" 2d clock setting and same volt, and ati services disbabled, everything is clocking like normal to 823/1000.

This is with the stock heatsink and fan. Fan is at 100% though. It will run 3D clocks without disabling cli but I turned it off because it is just one more process running. I like not having to mess with the voltage settings to get a good overclock.
Clock speeds on dothan are 2782 at 253 fsb.

In your task manager with ati drivers you will see three cli.exe running. I do not understand why there are three separate processes with the same name. I am disabling all three of them.

Thanks for that info. I would try more voltage but I am not on water cooling like you. Not yet anyways. XS forums makes money burn a hole in my pocket.

I use CCC to overclock my bios. here are the steps i take.

    1. open atitool
    2. click settings
    4. go to voltage control
    5. set desired Gpu voltage
    6. click apply
    7. click next
    8. close atitool
    step 2
    9. open CCC
    10. Go to overdrive
    11. single click on the core button
    12. use the /\ key on the keyboard untill you get the overclock you desire
    13. click apply
    14. open 3Dmark05 and run
    15. submit scores
you must up Vgpu voltage before using 3d app or computer will crash. the voltage changes back to 1.275v after the 3d test finishes. so if you do no more tests set core speed back to default.

I've only been benching with a X1300pro, so this may not apply at all....
When you disable CLI, you are basically disabling CCC, right? Every time I've tried that I loose Catalyst A.I. functions...= much worse scores in some tests.

wow really? I thought it would have been higher. I guess I'm happy my X1800XT does 9600 then. I really want an Opteron 175 that can hopefully do 2.6ghz stable on each core that way I can break 10k with the new drivers. My cpu sucks right now and no matter what I can never get much over the mid 9.6k range.

Well I think that disabling cli just disables the control center not all the functions. I will try it out and see the difference.

you can set the options in atitool, dont even need CCC or CP if you want to go with bare drivers

With cli enabled/disabled I get pretty much the same score on benches. AA and AF settings work but I do not have vpu recover. One thing I have noticed is the aa and af settings made be ati tool do not work. Here is a pic with memory showing 000.
