    Anyone got D2OL on Linux?

So far I have heard that D2OL runs faster on Win2k than Win2003, I haven't seen any XP or Linus comparisons. Will anyone be able to provide such results? I would not hesitate to change OS, even for a weird one I have never heard of, on my farm pc.

I do need XP though, to play BF2 on the other computer I have.

p.s. actually I don't need XP to run BF2, but I need at least one computer with XP on.

I have 2 D2OL rigs running Gentoo Linux. I haven't done apples to apples comparison (installing various OS on the same system) since the DF (Distributed Folding) project, but for DF the Linux was a bit faster than Win2K. Seat of my pants feel with D2OL is that it's about the same AKA not worth the down-time reinstalling a new OS.

This was on single-core non-HT machines. For dual-core, I expect Win2k3server and properly compiled Linux kernel to be about the same in D2OL while the Linux would edge out Win2kpro.

But for dual cores a server product would be better because consumer operating systems are geared for 1 cpus and the dual cpu or dual core support tacked on later. Server operating systems are geared for that from the ground up.

Only thing about a server product is it's ANNOYING! All the nag screens and shutdown windows... the need to run corporate AV... BLAH

I dont think Linux would like only 128mb ram while running D2OL. I was thinking of installing Linux on my dedicated cruncher.

I think it'd work as long as you killed cron so Linux didn't try to do it's daily HD re-indexing. I have to do this on one machine (don't want to waste $ on RD-RAM), but I forget offhand if it has 2x64 or 2x128 sticks.

Edit: Yup, 128mb total on the one rig.

Yes, 6 gigs is plenty. UnG is stuffing Linux+D2OL onto 256mb USB drives! Personally, I have one on a 2gb and one on a 4gb. The 2gb is uncomfortably tight; I'm looking forward to UnG posting the image for his setup.

Just tried Dbench on Win2003 standard edition. What a piece of $#%@ this is! Not only my time is 3 sec slower than on XP, this OS wont let me shutdown my computer, when I click shutdown, the OK button is not active, so I had to hit reset on my motherboard. Then after I booted again, it asked me why the hell I didn't turn it off properly, and I had to type it before I can log in again.

Sure, if they are just gathering dust. I originally got the CPU+RAM for free directly from Intel at one of their yearly recertification/propaganda courses.
