Best air cooler to use with IHS-less Venice?

I'm getting a new Venice in a few hours. I don't plan to remove the IHS on this just yet because of the recent death of my other Venice. I do want to tackle it again in the future however. Just wondering what the best air cooler for a IHS-less Venice is that'll make perfect contact with the core?

    TIA.

There's probably 100+ choices that will make "Perfect Contact" with the core when properly installed.......... So what's the question? Best performance? Thermalright XP-90 or XP-120.

The abloslte best for lots of heat is the Big Typhoon

    HANDS DOWN

xp-90/120 will not work with a removed IHS because it used the stock clips you need a heatsink that user the mobo mounting holes like the Big Typhoon.

with the IHS removed the CPU will be a little shorter and using the stock clips will not allow for ANY contact

This is no more than fantasy !!!! The XP90 & XP120 will work fine with the IHS removed! I've tested both and have had no issue with either...... The Big Typhoon is a favorite among Thermaltake fanboys! End of story, lets stick to the facts!

My xp90 didn't impress me that much, i recommend the Thermaltake Big Typhoon.

Since i'm actually endorsing a TT product (and many others agree with me here), it really says somethign about the Big Typhoon...

The facts are that with the IHS removed the xp 90/120 will not have the proper amount of pressure due to the use of the stock clips. it was designed to sit on a CPU with a IHS and that is it.

The BT uses screws so you can adjust the height of it and the pressure it applies to the CPU so if you remove the IHS you can still apply the proper amount of pressure to the CPU and make good contact.

Kool, then enjoy..... The BT is just another Thermalright imitation, if it works for ya, then life is good.

I won't argue with ya..... The facts apparently elude you. I've run both with good success! This was only intended as a response to CRUSH-ER's question, not a debate with someone that is mis-informed! Say goodnight.......

You can hate Thermaltake all you want but that doesn't stop the BT from being a good product. I know too many people who have gotten excellent results from it, way better than my XP90 did in all direct comparisons.

What are your guys temps with the typhoon. Under load at around 1.4xx volts I get as high as 43 degrees. With a room temp of 28 c. I think its too high. Idle temp is fine.

i had to modify the xp120 bracket to make it give enough tension on a naked core. do not listen to pcdoc1...he sounds like a troll that is disagreeing with everyone else rather than himself...

There is a problem with XP-120 and naked core, its not that easy to get it plain to surface.
And just touching the XP very little will make it loose contact and reboot.
Someone here made a mod with screwing it to base instead of the clamps and that solutions seems to be alot better.
    Everything extra is bad!

hehe chill down mate. there ARE no thermaltake fanboys after all the tt has put out on the market but there is no denying it, the tt typhoon is one of the best air cooling solutions on the market (if not THE best, considering cooling/noise)

    Goodnight all......

In my own head to head testing of single die chips, the BT was no better than the XP90 or the XP120... I just found that by putting screws up through the retention bracket from the bottom and then using wing nuts to install it, I took a lot less chance of breaking the core with the Big Typhoon. Plus I didn't have to mdify the stock bracket, saving it for resale.

On x2 processors, I found the BT conistantly outperformed both the 90 and 120 with high speed fans by at least 4-6c while staying silent.

Buy what you like, but folks here are after the last MHz and usually a consensus is a valid opinion...

Talking I'm a fan of the TTBT myself

See hers in sig (and that's the BAD chip ). Some of my recent posts address stuff like epoxying the crossbar to the HSF itself, thumbscrews for mounting and lapping both HSF and chip. Oh, and forget about mounting in the case w/ the case standing up. Just put 'er down and make life simple if you get this.
Thermalrights in my experience will chip the core due to the leverage required in mounting.
    Guess it's all working

Just remembered I did try it on a venice (backups #2,3) and temps were in low 30s under load @ 1.6Vcore. That was b4 I stuck the cross bar on permanently - PITA then.

i run san sandiego naked with a Typhoon. No different mounting it from when it had the IHS.

on the DFI board, with the typhoon and no core, some memories won't fit in the first slot, if that's an issue, but were talking the huge corsair rams only. The xp120 has far less clearance, and ANY rams may not fit.

I'd reccomend the Hyper 6, works great for me. Temps start out at 25C and idle at around 29, load at 35-38. And I don't even have my IHS off, and I don't see why the hyper6 wouldnt work with it off. Comes with a crappy fan, but its cheap ~ $25, get a better fan, or do push/pull config.
