Hey is a mini water cooler sufficient enough to build a phase change system?

back from a looong holiday, well could'nt bring back any parts as the regular A/Cs where too big!

i did however get a chance to see a couple of A/Cs working without there coverings so i kinda have figured out how they work now.

any way i was wondering if it was possible to build a phase change system from the components of a mini watercooler? any help on this topic will be much appreciated.

i wouldn't. I mean you could do it, but most of those systems use very small compressor's that only need to manage a very little load. I like using something bigger like at least a 1/4hp or so... Many of those units use something like a 1/12hp compressor.
I like building Vapor phase coolers......

I think those tiny compressors are a good start. They're easy to fit into a case, and barely use any power which is nice. You won't hit quite as low as a 1/4 HP, but you should still get below 0 which is perfectly respectible.

If you've got the parts, its worth at least testing out. If it doesn't work, then get a bigger compressor and swap them out.

i think a tec might do better than an overpowered phase unit.

I haven't tried, but I'm guessing even a 1/12 HP compressor would hold its own against all but the largest TEC systems, and without all the watercooling gear and external power supply(s).

TEC is very inefficient. It must be rated higher than what your heatload is going to be anyway to begin with. If you fail to do that, you just insulated your CPU real good. There really isn't middle ground when you use TEC for this reason. Phasechange on the other hand, temp goes up, capcity goes up with it to equilibrium point. Consdiering effort involved though I don't see advantages of smaller powered unit than per say 1/5hp... anything below will not have good displacement in compressor to give you very cold temp... I am thinking though, small compressor might be useful in that...
    1) you want system without much of condesnation. 2) less electricity bill. 3) potentially quieter? I am not sure on this account though... I have unit here sitting with 1/3hp which turns out to be as quiet as very quiet 1/4HP one. And at same time, I have VapoLS which has even smaller compressor than 1/4HP one I had (both danfoss) which noticebly has more noise than either 1/3 or 1/4hp one.... (And it depends on how much it is charged for nosie from what i heard).
That said, I just started making my own phase change unit and it is much fun to learn all this. (If you have time and money, I keep finding nice little suprises on involved cost for first unit - tools - unless you are HVAC technician :P)

hey, can you just use the whole of the watercoolers original system but change the part where the evaporator is meant to be but leave the rest of the system as is. or do you have to completely rebuild the whole system?

Does anyone sell any parts or even whole phase change systems and are located in the UK, i have cash waiting, i think it would be better if i got a ready made system and then worked from there.

zub, if youre interested, i can prolly sell you my mach1, it is getting a 408a mod in a couple of weeks but you'll need to find your own way of mounting evap (i removed casing, as i might fit new block soon) if you want it you can have it for £??? in about a month. Also, i can, and might mod it into a Chilly1 Xtreme (Chilly1 evap and regass), if i do, i'll be looking for about £??? (it's a lot of work you know )
