HELP!!! System just blew...F**k!!!

OH NO!

i restarted tried to bring my new 4400 into windows at 260 fsb and everything was going normal, windows loading screen...then POOF

system instantly powered down, then dead.

I have been trying to fix it for the last hour, when you hit the power button, the fans and led's on the sli-dr light up for about half a second and then it cuts out again.

I popped the 4400+ out and tried to power up, same problem, i tried using an older 20 pin 470 watt PSU, same problem...

i have a 3000+ kicking around, but i dont think that it would make a difference right, if the board wont do anything with no CPU in socket, ity has to be the board right?
Did i FRY MY PSU, MOBO, or new cpu!!!

Good news is it sounds as though the cpu is OK and it is shutting down rather than "running-on" and not posting. Make sure your cpu fan is functional and connected properly to the mobo. Also just run a barebones system with one stick of ram, cpu, keyboard and graphics card (ideally out of the case) to see if you can get it to post.

have you tried to reset cmos? also, your board will do nothing without a cpu... as long as you werent using the 704 series bios with over 113% then it isnt likely your cpu is dead.

No using 623 bios 1.55 110% so about 1.7 vcore

but without a cpu the board and system should still power up, fans spinning etc. It is like the power supply voltage protection is kicking in.

I have a new board coming in this week abit an8 sli because of all thew problems trhis DFI has given me.

But crap it was working ok and poof...i dont know what to say...anyone out there help me?

I have tried everything but I am afraid to put the 3000+ in there hin case it wrecks that CPU too.

i have tried:

reset cmos
pop battery out for 10 mins
reset "safe boot" jumper
alternate PSU

powered down for half an hour just left it alone, popped mem out...

anyone else think they can help?

Yea just try putting the 4400+ back in and holding down Insert while hitting the power button, that sometimes works as a soft CMOS reset, otherwise you'll have to unplug the PSU from the wall and pull out the mobo battery and use the reset jumper.

I dont think you guys get it, this isnt like a cold boot, or I overclocked too far and it wont post thing, the power is cutting out a hlaf second after i hit the power button, i cant get into bios, anything, fans light up and spin for a second then stop....something major has happened i tihnk.

Try what I suggested - that will ensure that there are no short circuits. If it posts gradually add the peripherals one by one.

When you get the AN8 pop your 3000+ in there first and flash the bios to 16 and enable 2T memory timming...it seems to work best with this board for X2s! try the 4400 in the AN8 then try and sort out the troubles with the dfi board.

Sounds like a PSU prob to me. Most have like a reset switch to make sure proper voltage is sent to the correct places. Put a tester on it and check your 3.3 5 12v rails. Have u been use'n the 5v sett'n for your mem? If so that may be it too.

Popped out mobo set it up on a testbed, 4400+ back in reset cmos, basic setup 1 disk, vidcard, 1 stick ram in slot 2, tried booting with insert 1, 2, 3, 4 etc, no go same problem occurs.

Has to be mobo right?

Because if it was PSU, the other one would have at least posted/spun the fans up right?

And if it was CPU, likewise power would come on, fans would spin, but mobo diagnostic led's would get stuck at CPU part of boot up.

unless somone has a miracle cure here id say i Have a toasted DFI, my second one.

nope after the dfi killed 6 sticks of ocz VX on me i have benn on the 3.3 rail for mem.

also i have a definate working other PSU that wont power up the board even in the slightest....

i checked the reset power switch on my power bar and also plugged into raw power from the socket, still no go.

Based on the work you have done I would tend to think it is the mobo. What I dont understand though is whether the system shutting down entirely is symptomatic of the mobo itself being defective! Did your previous DFI exhibit the same symptoms or did it just hang?

The old dfi killed memory, so i rma'd it.

this is the new one, but to be safe i havent put my RMA'd set of VX memory in it until this cold boot issue was solved....which it never will be......

now i put in a 4400+ in crank the juice a little and poof another one bites the dust.

I am betting when i get the abit in first try it fires up.

the bummer is i sold this board on ebay last night.....the dude lives in town and just emailed me he wants to pick it up tomorrow.

The only other possible problem I can think of is that the cpu fan is not functional however I assume that even for the split second that it runs you can see that fan turning - right? Otherwise it all points to the mobo assuming no short circuiting.

Get a multimeter, jump off your PSU and take readings. It could be a combination of things. Better to be sure the PSU is fine for the new motherboard.

cpu fan is definately fiunctional, i tried to trick it too by plugging in a 80mm fan that definately works as well.

Stick the 3000+ in there. If it boots up fine then unfortunately it is likely the X2 chip.

I had exactly the same problem with my PC. Power on and then 4 leds and fans for 1/2 second...
I was sure it was a mobo related problem, i tried all.
So i decided to RMA my DFI.
Diagnostic: corrupted BIOS or fried chipset.
I got a new one.

That is EXACTLY the problem, 4 led's light up for a second, then stops.

who do you email to get an RMA going?

It didnt wreck your PSU or CPU though did it?

i've had this happen on 3 occasions with different baords of the years....every time it was a dead mobo....i think the rest of your stuff is fine.

DFI doesnt take RMA directly from my country so i did it through the shop were i bought it.
Fortunately in my case there were no other damaged components than the mobo.
