I know it can be set, I'm just not sure exactly how. Maybe the PS3 faq might help?

Well I am building a system come very soon. The deal my parents made with me is that when i build i give them my laptop. How long do you think it took me to answer that question?
Components:
Case: Antec 1200
CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE
CPU cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA790FXT-UD5P AM3 DDR3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD
Memory: 4GB (2x2GB) Mushkin DDR3 1333
Graphics card: XFX ATI HD Radeon 4870
Wireless card: EDIMAX EW-7728In 32bit PCI Wireless 802.11n Draft 2.0 PCI Card
Monitor: Acer X223Wbd Black 22" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor
PSU: Corsair 750TX
HDD: Seagate 7200.10 250GB (i prefer western digital)
I was thinking of either getting another 4870 later or a 4850 or even a 4890 for either Crossfire or have one as a dedicated folder.

Im also only looking at only running the P3 till December and then building an Intel Core2 Quad XFX 260 BE system for gaming and dedicated 24/7 folding box. the build above is mostly for gaming on the cheap. although it does cost over $1000.

I haven't looked around here for awhile, did the whole problem with ATI cards not using their full potential get fixed yet? I'm looking at a new card for my SFF, and ATI really looks nice for the amount of money I'll spend...
My 4870 averages about the same as the 8800GS/9600GSO, but some of the new work units out there (that are scarce atm) I get 4000+ PPD out of. I want more of them. Still mostly 2700-3500 PPD units out there currently however.

Damn it, it went out of stop but this might be my other option if i decide to go nvidia. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130443
EVGA 260 SSC for the price of a 4870 hmm im goona have to think.

TBH it doesn't matter what card you have, if you fold, nvidia is the way if you play games, who cares if one has 67 FPS and the second one 59, you wont notice a thing , i went for nVidia because of folding. with the new 5900 core I have 10K on one VGA, something a ATI can dream about.

Thanks I will take a look. I was messing around with it last week and couldnt change the channel. It would only go to the channel with the Earth on it; But I dont know what I am doing either. That will be great to get the PS3 going once I get it figured out.
Do you have your 4879 overclocked at all? I have never oc's a gpu and have both my 4850 and 4830 oc'd through the CCC. but I have recently read that the shaders is what makes all the difference, but dont know how to oc the shaders or if its even possible on ati cards.
I think I am currently getting around 2.5-3.5K PPD per card. a little better performance from the 4850 but not much.
ATI cards don't have a separate shader clock per se. Use the core clock. I did overclock it a little but CCC only allows up to 790 max, boo. I need to use something else to OC but I just haven't messed with it.

thanks. I know what you mean; doesnt add much. I have both cards maxed out using the CCC. Better than nothing. I dont game though, thought it would help for folding. I was also thinking about it; between both my 4850 and 4830, I get a total of 4-5k PPD roughly I think. So my original post was a little off.
Bad thing is 2nd system is P45 so can either run both ati cards in that machine which is probably better than buying 1 new Nvidia card and trying to sell these; not sure. For my I7 I want to try and find 3-4 decent priced Nvidia cards that will provide good PPD per card.
I do need to power a 32", 26:, and 17" monitors though. will be replacing 17" with another 26". 32 & 26 run at 1080P res. so the cards for those need to be fairly decent. was thinking about a gtx 260 55nm card and maybe some used 9800gtx's or something. maybe some gx2's not sure yet. need to research more
@coo-coo; thanks. I finally figured it out. Now have my PS3 folding for us and getting my points! this will help me get into the top100 too! I am currently @ 101, but only moments away from hitting 100. I am making steady progress but would love to switch to Nvidia to double or triple my PPD. overal plan is to run 6-8 gpus between 2 I7 rigs and 1 or gx2 on my P45 rig. Hopefully will be able to get everything together by summer, lol

Was going to ask in separate thread but you guys here seem to have tried lots of stuff so...... Long cables for monitors keyboards usb etc are there any rules or sources you guys know about? I'm thinking of a sort of kvm setup with one machine in another room.....Thoughts anyone?

A kvm setup is not really needed you should be able to do everything you need by VNC remote desktop over the Lan and network connection with the exception of editing the bios setup.
However if you really need a cable connection you might check out the cables at www.cablestogo.com I got a vga KVM cable setup for work several years ago from them since the computer is located in the back office and the monitor keyboard and mouse were needed to be located in the front office and they work fine for us with Win98 and WinXP.

Thanks....I think....Let me dig around for more on VNC 'cos in stuff like this I'm a total noob. Cables would work really well for work though

You better watch out! This gets addicting. 8000 PPD won't cut it for the top rung of the team. I started at 5KPD when the PPD used to be higher and now am doing 40KPD with the worse PPD per WU.
