computer clustering with standard PC hardware is not practical or cost effective, it's cheaper to run multi CPU boards and manage that. There are ways, the biggest user of standard PC clusters is Google, they use any old crap computer and cluster many thousands of them together.

Clustering on standard PC's requires Windows Enterprise server editions or Linux Enterprise editions and optical networking. Unfortunately the limited PCI bus speed of standard consumer PC's makes the task have a pretty poor pay off. Server hardware with high speed bus technology is better at it for sure, but still not great.

If you want to cluster for distributed computing projects, then that is already a type of cluster and by adding your own you are only adding a layer of complexity to a system that already distributes workload very well.

because celerons are crappy and i want to buy 2 intel p3 cpus (maby 600mhz x2). cuz celerons are F***ed up !

Why do you need to run a cluster? Just for sh*ts and giggles or for a real purpose? I truthfully don't think that it is worth the hassle. Also, doing it on a 100mpbs connection probably will degrade the perfomance.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish by building a cluster? Do you have any cluster enabled applications, or plan on writing any? You could try to run a mosix cluster which is an attempt at having a cluster of machines operate like a single, multi-cpu machine. Their abstraction layer is still far, far away from being able to "fork it and forget it", the motto they're trying use, but its a nice start. Forget about F@H or d2ol or apps that have closed source components running on this, you'll need to have some dev experience and access to the code to make anything really cluster aware.

I'd love for someone to modify a avi/dvd ripper to be cluster-aware. Split up the file and distribute, encode, reassemble. No doubt gigabit links will be required for the cluster network to be truly efficient, but gige equipment is pretty accessible pricewise now.

well 100mb is ample!!!! did you know you can run a fast cluster on 54mb(WIFI)!!!! u see the more computers you have the more bandwidth you nees. but you see im only clustering 2-3 computers which will eaven run with a 10m/b lan. however i have a 1000mb/s lan in both the pc's i want to run.

what am i stying to acomplish??

im trying to buid a cluster(obviously) that will compule my HL2 maps and css maps and will also encode and comvert at high speed o and one more thing... im using it as a server for my lan parties(100ppl) and an FTP server. (this is why im making a cluster. and its cheap) iv got all the parts.

well... its a challenge any way. Xeons are CRAP!!They have one of the worst performance! and besides im living in Australia. in Australia Xeons are expensive. they like us$150 more than in the us. id rather get an AMD operation. AMD operations are much faster, however much more expensive. and besides i dun wanna spend any more money on my server. i aleady have all the parts. id rather spend money on an AMD x2 4400+, ATI corsfire, 2x x900XT(when comes out) 2gb of Kingston DDR RAM.

Wow, guess you don't know that they perform about on par with P4s...

An OPTERON (not operation) rig will cost you a bit more than a Xeon rig. The Xeon rig can overclock much more than the Opteron rig also.

well P4's arnt my favoriate, that is y in getting an AMD duel core. p4's have a huge bottle neck (800fsb). AMD HTT speed runs at 1000mhz (2000mts).and p4's are only half duplex as AMD's are full duplex. this makes a huge performance increase.

im personaly not for xeon cpu's, they are too expensive! i dun know how u built a duel xeon for US$500.

thanx. well if you say that they good for overclocking ill take ur word for it, im just not happy with 533FSB on the cheap xeons though. yes i know xeons are better than the specs that i want to cluster, however i dun realy have money to throw around.

Nvm on that buy the 133 lv's can do 200 fsb normalyl.
