SATA limited my O/C ? Help

    Hey folks,

I just recently moved from IDE to a WD Raptor 74g SATA drive. Well the drive works great but my O/C went to hell.

As you can see in my sig I was running that setup on my IDE. 8hrs prime stable @ 1.63V. 2-3 hours stable at 1.6v and 45mins - 1 hour at 1.57.

All I changed was my HDD. Now I cannot even pass SuperPi1m at 1.57v 10x290. Prime fails at 0 mins.

At 10x290 1.63v (8hrs prime before) it fails in 5 minutes.

Im running the SATA on 3&4 at the moment. I have had it on EVERY port Nvidia and Sil3114.

    Nothing makes a difference.

I adjusted my HTT multi all the way to 2x. No help still fails.

It seems the CPU wants more voltage then before to get stable with SATA. Which makes no sense.

I now have to give it 1.63v at 10x290 to get it to pass superpi 1M !! It was 8 hrs prime before ..WTF !?! lol

Im using Nforce 6.53 (Windows IDE) and 618-1 Bios.

    Any help is appreciated.

Just for the sake of argument, try some different SATA cables and also try locating the drives further away from the mobo (as far as you can). Also experiment with running the drives off a second power supply not connected to your system. Should help you narrow down the cause

I have tried the "sure connect" that WD provides and Im now using the DFI connectors and the dedicated SATA power from my 520w Modstream. No change.

As far as moving the cables... There as far away as I can get them.

No other PS to try as secondary... Hmm surely my Modstream can handle this Raptor.

    sigh... doesnt make any sense.

it wasn't the modstream I was worried about from a wattage sense, I was wondering if the drives were introducing instability back into the power supply.

also try a different BIOS, just for the sake of argument and to say you did it. Otherwise I would sell the raptors and get the hitachi SATA II with NCQ at 7200, they throw less heat, are faster at burst and faster at sustained transfer as well and you will get double the storage probably with change left over from when you get selling the Raps... just my thoughts, good luck
