    The Zalman CNPS-9500!

    http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/edi...x2005-1_3.html

It's a heatpipe aircooler...but it's like no aircooler you've ever seen before. And Zalman claims it cools better than an 'internal watercooling system w/120mm fan' whatever that means. And I wonder who the 'competitors' they compare it to are. In any case, Thermalright had better watch out, because Zalman is busting out with the elegant industrial design once again!

If this cooler is everything Zalman claims it to be, it could be a much more affordable and easier to install alternative to watercooling which performs as good or better.

Of course it will, after all it's Zalman

I hope it will be silent as the CNPS7x00 series was, but that's what Zalman usually aims for afaik and still they perform good.

And the weight is another interesting part...

Why is there an indent in the middle of the fins? Pretty stupid if you ask me.. Also, they should shroud it and use 2 fans in a push - pull config. The 'back' of this HS is pretty useless since there is no airflow there.

The idea is kinda similar to Thermaltake's Sonic Tower except this one has all copper fins in a circular configuration. Btw, Tt has come out with a pair of good coolers as well - and Tt's Big Typhoon can easily challenge the XP-120, if not even more. I'm running on the Sonic Tower right now, and it seems it's doing his job pretty well too.

fill it (any of the heatpipe coolers actually!) with "liquid metal"

I don't think the big one would even fit in a case... I think it's just for show?

    It's like 2 feet tall....

The smaller model in this pic is using a 92mm fan, so now I'm sure the big one won't even fit inside a case.

Sadly, that huge one is in fact for show. I for one would have liked to cut a hole in my case door and have the HSF hanging out the side of my box like those big engines that come out of the hoods of 60's era muscle cars. The real one can be seen mounted on an A8N-SLI Deluxe here:

    http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows/...spx?i=2434&p=8

    Here's the Zalman product page:

    http://www.zalmanusa.com/mboard/mboa...&order_da=desc

Impressively, this monster will only weigh 498g! They've made the copper fins very very thin to reduce weight and increase heat transfer. I'm just curious what kind of watercooling setup they compare it to. If it's actually better than watercooling it would have to be some kind of physics-defying miracle, but I'm not putting it past Zalman, they have some badass engineers working over there in Korea. I am surprised they have this two-sided design but only put a fan on one side...but I'm sure they tried the dual-fan push-pull setup and found it didn't improve cooling characteristics enough to justify it. Remember that Zalman is all about quiet computing and 2 fans would be louder than just 1.

This could be just the thing for people who want to run aircooled OCed dual-core rigs. Especially Pentium D, which gets hot enough for me to bake a pizza on top of.

I think when they said "internal watercooling system", they were referring to CM's Aquagate series.

i want one now . hope it's not too expensive. it would be nice if the thing is filled with liquid metal like galium or something . my oc is limited by cooling. i'm contemplating watercooling, but too lazy to maintain it. what would you recommend? asetak waterchill or cooler master aquagate?

the reason its like that is to keep it silent. zalmans more about silence.

Isn't that the area where your casefans are sucking already? Seems like a perfect cooler to me

Would be nice if you could rotate it somehow, so that you could have the fan blowing backwards out of the case no matter how your CPU socket is oriented.

OMG?! There are boards that have their socket oriented differently???

I just checked the DFI Ultra-D in panic lol.. but it seems to be oriented the same as the ASUS.

EDIT: Hmm i was wrong.. but on the picture of it mounted on the ASUS you can see some screws in the same places as the DFI has....
    ASUS: http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/...allman9500.jpg
    DFI: http://www.3dchips-fr.com/imglib/big2/1104831683_38.jpg
Maybe zalman supplies a bracket so you can mount it any way you like?

EDIT2: Ok.. i don't think you need to worry.. It seems that the base of the cooler has a little piston in the middle over which you place a clip.. you can place it any way you want.. Sticking it through the heatpipes might be a little more fiddly.. but it's all possible
