Apple to ditch IBM, switch to Intel chips**No Rumors**

Apple Computer plans to announce Monday that it's scrapping its partnership with IBM and switching its computers to Intel's microprocessors, CNET News.com has learned.

Apple has used IBM's PowerPC processors since 1994, but will begin a phased transition to Intel's chips, sources familiar with the situation said. Apple plans to move lower-end computers such as the Mac Mini to Intel chips in mid-2006 and higher-end models such as the Power Mac in mid-2007, sources said.

The announcement is expected Monday at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco, at which Chief Executive Steve Jobs is giving the keynote speech. The conference would be an appropriate venue: Changing the chips would require programmers to rewrite their software to take full advantage of the new processor.

Great news! A new way for me to make fun of Apple users at school and work!

Does this mean that we will be able to build our own Apple computers now? I wouldn't mind trashing the Intel setup they used (for a d2ol rig) and then throwing in my own AMD stuff.

since mac os x is based off Unix it's surely not too hard to recode for x86 (if apple do decide to use one of these).

Steve from Apple has now confirmed and officially announced this at his keynote speech. Apparently Apple have had versions of OSX running on PCs for the past five years. It works so well already that nobody noticed that his presentation was actually being made on an 2.6Ghz P4 Intel based machine until he told them.
The plan is that the first Intel based Mac will appear in a year's time and the PowerPC platform will be phased out by the end of 2007. They already have showed that they have emulation software which is capable of nearly full speed emulation of certain PowerPC applications in the form of dynamic translation transparent codenamed 'Rosetta' (i.e. QuickTransit).

The development machines which will be available by the end of the day to developers are P4 3.64Ghz kits which will be for sale at $999.

However, Schiller said the company does not plan to let people run Mac OS X on other computer makers' hardware. "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac," he said.

So much for x86 apps compatibility.
