Is it just me or is VX RAM not suited for 24/7 use?

I just had another stick of VX go bad on me. This is my 2nd set to go bad in 2 months. The 1st stick went out on my Neo2. I wonder if running 3.5-3.6v 24/7 is too much? I fold on my machines, so they are always on.

My temp probes were reporting 75-80F under load @3.6v, so I know temps didn't kill it. I'm going back to TCCD - I ordered some OCZ PC3200 Plat Rev2 from the egg. Real bummer, I liked the VX.

what cooling? temp probes aren't always accuate, remember, and 3.6v is a pretty large amount to put through for 24/7 ambient cooling usage.

I'm using a coolermaster aerogate 3 for temp readings. It had BETTER be acurate. Still, with temps being only 75-80F under load, I don't see how 3.6v is a problem- it's not like it was running hot. I've got 2 80mm fans blowing over the sticks. They are always cool to the touch, never been more than slightly warm.

And Clawhammers are only specced to 1.5v but we run them at 1.7-18v with no troubles.

High voltage kills chips. Temps aren't the only factor.
You were not supposed to see this.

Yeah, but the warrenty for them is 3.5V +- 5%. They should be fine to 3.675V based on that.

I know that. But I also know of people who run their VX at 3.7/8 and have for quite awhile with no failures. But I don't think they leave them on for 24 hours a day, either. If the mem dies this quick at 3.6v, I would think that the lifespan at 3.5 would be only slightly longer.

My theory is just that with VX/BH-5 you shouldn't run the high voltages 24 hours a day. It seems to kill the mem.

i have been running the bh-5 i have now (classic BH-5) w./ 3.4v since i got them (been about 6months now i believe) 24/7 (usually) w./ no issues (*knock on wood*). others have been doing the same with classic bh with no issues whatsoever.

i cant comment on the newer UTT stuff though, since i don't have first hand experience with those chips.

I run my TwinMOS SP w/UTT CH @ 3.5v for 24/7, 265 2-2-2-6 1T, and a lot of time @ 3.7v, 270+ same timmings, for benching, so I think that it depends on luck, who knows...

    It is to me??
If it is, I give them those voltages with my DFI Ultra D and the 4v jumper properly connected...

I have a 120mm fan blowing over the rams and mosfet and it is warm at touch, but it runs OK (the fan I am using is the fan that cames with Cooler Master Stacker in the HardDisk module, so it is a silent and has little power)
BTW, my case is big and it is well ventilated (2x120 intake, 1x120 exaust and two Vantec Tornado in the WC Radiator, blowing out of the case the heat)

    weird...
my bh-5 are running with 3.7V since 2 years without any cooling to them! (only case fans: 5xY.S. Tech 8cm @ 5V not much airflow)
Computer runs about 10hrs a day

    There are 2 ways:
    1. You ever get bad ram
    2. Your board doen't give clean power to them. Fluctations etc.

I think they are cooled well enough

Hey guys. Ever notice what board you all have that have VX dying on it, kit after kit? I'll bet it always the stick in RAM slot 2 that goes. Guys running the booster on other boards are churning away with few failures.

On the DFI, we are thinking it might be best to use bigtoe's 3.3v trick/mod: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...ad.php?t=61632

Do this and crank your 3.3v rail up and you can get 3.4v easily. This may just be much more reliable and easier on the board, as the mosfet near the RAM stays nice and cool. Memory seems to run cooler also.

Wish I'd known about that earlier! The one that died was actually in slot 4. The Ultra-D is a killer mobo- literally.

What are my chances for an RMA since I wasn't technically outside of the warranty?
