OK. Serious solution: Don't buy Gigabyte Intel boards. I'm serious. Stick to either DFI, Abit or Asus...in that order.

While I realize that the point was I need a solution OTHER than replacing the motherboard.

My guess is that there will be no other solution. Sell or RMA the board and get one from one of the companies I listed above.

it's not just a Gigabyte problem. My abit aa8xe had this issue. It's due to poor/low fsb termination voltage. Asus has setting in bios. My Abit did not. Least not the vanilla or NON fatality board. Post in the vmod sectoin and prepare hellfire or someone to ask for 50pics of the board and various IC's
    it's never fast enough!

And thereby raising this voltage keeps it stable?

Try if the PLL chip is getting hot.
If you can´t keep you finger on it over few seconds, put a heatsink on it.

Helped me with DFI board a bit, while DDR2 was operating at DDR830+ speeds with 3-2-2-1 timings

Look under that P4 powerplug. It´s that black chip, right from those two crystals.

if you can raise the vtt with a board mod it will stop spikes. Only need like 0.1v or so extra

Tried stock, still no luck. Looks like I am going to be forced to scrap yet another board.

hmm, this is interesting. I had this same issue with msi P4n diamond and now currently with my asus P5ND2-SLI. Although your motherboard is a 955 chipset do you think it could have anything to do with the pci express lanes? That seems to be the only thing they have in common with each other nf4 and 955

maybe you are getting the C1E thing mixed up with what you think the CPU speed should be?

"The command and conquer model," said the EA CEO, "doesn't work. If you think you're going to buy a developer and put your name on the label... you're making a profound mistake."

No no no, this is FSB specific. Its random and it doesnt always decrease, more often it increases from the speed specified in BIOS
