Are you guys using watercooling? right now I have my 3500+ winnie at 2600 mhz with 1.52 volts, it can run prime stable if I open the side panel of my case (using XP-120 btw), will I need watercooling to benefit from the AS's overclockability? can it handle heat better than the winnie?

right let me get this straight...

these 'new' 3500's are sledgehammers or clawhammers with 512kb cache?

2200mhz stock I presume? and they are all CAA2C's?

yes i know, i live 30mins or less from NE in Calif, and i have trouble waiting 2 days for anything i buy.

Im a bit worried about these Cpus..

With Eva's issues with 3dmark "freezing up" around 2.8ghz sounds kinda odd.
Alex also had one that seemed pretty weird around 2.7ghz, altho i think his Shuttle has some sort of power fluxuateing issue.

Anyways, i look forward to more testing from everyone, and i really am disapionted that there isn't to much interest in these Cpus. there certianly Better then Newcastles, and possibly Winnies.

AKAIR (as far as i remember) the Clawhammers on the 754pin mobos did pretty good, they were only limited to the 1t command, then AMD made the Newcastle to support better 2t memory command.

I think the Claws overclocked pretty good. my 3400+ did 2.5~2.6ghz on air on my DFI 754p UT mobo.

Just finished reading the entire thread, one of my friends alerted me to the fact that those were failed fx55s that didnt have all of their 1mb cache working so rather than throw it out, amd disabled the bad parts of the cache and as long as 512mb was good, it could be saved and downgraded. Basically its an underclocked, cripped fx55. I have seen what you guys get, some hitting 2.8GHz. Those are SS still, I presume. All of you should hit 2.6GHz at stock volts, if not then they are failed fx55s in more than 1 way, their cache is bad and/or they couldnt hit 2.6GHz on stock volts. I guess those with good cache became the 4000+ and if some cache is bad, 3500+

Looking at this chart the blue CPU's are Claws.

All the Claws before the 3500+ 512kb parts were all 2.4-2.6 1mb cache parts.

Seeing the data in the chart seems to make it clear that 3500+ cpus are

    a. old stock steppings that did not sell as well as they should have

    b. binned and/or failed 1mb cache parts that were cut back to 512kb cache

    c. AMD made way to many of that stepping and need to make some money off of them. They are still getting $200+ each for them, not to bad if you have 20,000-30,000 parts to sell.

Personally I think they just made to many of that stepping, and they are making the best of it by making a part that sells better.

if you look, there a listing for a 3500+ Clawhammer for jan 2005.

3700+? No. 55's? yes. But the 55 is made fron sSOI, so it's understandable. Are you saying that this stepping 3500+ is a failed FX-55 or that it's sSOI?

I would guess they would be fx-55/4000+ where part of the cache failed as well.

It's all speculation until we get an AMD rep in here and make him/her squeal. Or if someone has a reliable friend on the inside. We've already got a few people chiming in to say it's a failed FX of some sort... so maybe there's some truth to that.

Not to mention we're getting them for cheap, because as soon as the cat is fully out of the bag............prices will likely climb.
