HDD that doesn't sound like a HAMSTER WHEEL

Yeah, so I want a quiet HDD, I have Maxtor 40 and 80gB's that make a very high frequency whine that irritates me. I have nice fast Hitachi SATA drives that are quiet at idle with no high pitch, but when active they sound like the fluffy hamster running on the exercise wheel inside of the plastic HABITRAIL cage. It's not only LOUD, but very irritating.
How bout a very quiet high speed HDD??

Get a 5400 RPM drive if you want quiet. It will throw out less heat too so if it is still too loud for you you can insulate it with some foam padding.
For those of you about to post:

7200rpm WD 120gb with 8mb cache is nice and quiet for me.

my 20gb 7200rpm maxtor with 2mb cache sounds like its got rocks attached to the head though.

at least I cant hear it 2 rooms away like the old Caviar 3200 or whatever it is.. still going, been like that for about 5 years

I also have a maxtor 80gb 7200rpm model. When browsing and listening to music i use ATI tool to tune it down to the quiet side as opposed to the well performing side. When i turn on my games i put it back up to performance, this makes it louder but it doesnt sound like a hamster wheel. It sounds like the read/write cycle, i cant even hear it spinning.

You might try and find a Seagate Baracuda IV or V. Nothing beats them in the noise area.

My WD Caviar IDE drives (2 120GB's in RAID0) are nearly silent.

Seagate's newer drives are very nice, too.

i think ur looking for a samsung SP1614C charlie (SP1614N for PATA)
it has 160GB's and is very fast
u can hear a noticeable clattering when the drive is accessed but there is almost no spinning-sound (no whining at all )
