Abit AA8XE, cheaper than the Fatal1ty.

P4 3.7EE is an excellent chip but probly a bit out of your price range.

2.8 prescott is a good clocker, on water you can probly hit 4.0Ghz stable which will be a 285Mhz(ish) FSB.

get some nice DDR2 with micron chips and you should be able to run 1:1 3-2-2-4 timings @ 2.0v

for air cooling or water cooling you dont really need a more advanced board than that.

then all you need is a decent graphics card, which i'll leave upto you

Budget overclocker from parts available now.

DFI 925X-T2 known good to 300FSB. I tested PC ICE's board when we white trash overclocked in the hotel room with my EE 8x multiple.

Get a new 2.8 and enjoy

If you dont mind spending the money the Fatality should do ok but there are a few reports of a problem breaking 280FSB on some boards. I was stuck at 267FSB until I unloaded uguru and I was able to max out at 280FSB. I sent the board back and the replacement board was able to hit 340FSB 1:1

If you have the money and dont want to take a chance on the ABit board then the Asus should hit the numbers you need every time.

OCZ, Centon, PDP, Corsair, and Mushkin all have the new Micron modules.

I'm with Fugger on this one. Don't settle on a mobo go with the DFI 925X-T2. Depending on the budget pick your proc 2.8 is good for the oc but if you can't afford the memory to go with that oc (not to mention the cooling) you may want to get a faster chip and cheaper memory.

    What is your budget?

^^^ wot i wouldn't give for that 3.73 EE ES...

2.8's are well cheap so get that, the best mobo (£150?) and best memory (£250)? + 2.8 which is around (£90?) and your still under budget! you could even afford to go with the X800 PCI-E.. thats only (£140?)

ok shigs, i'll try to get you as close to that £600 mark as possible and better than your current setup i'm a UK dude too so lets see what we can do...

    P4 560J £261.27
    DFI LanParty 925X-T2 £156.77
    Corsair XMS2 5400C4PRO Twin2X (2 x 512Mb) 1GB Dual Channel Pack £196.00

Grand Total = £614.04 Inc VAT

If you go with a P4 520 @ £104.90 the grand total would only be £457.67

That would be a nice rig

Fugger used the XE, more specifically: DFI 925XE-T2V

i dunno if thats out yet, or how much it costs.

i myself am running an Abit AA8XE, only downside with this board is it wont go lower than cas 3.0 in the BIOS, wheras the DFI does cas 2.5 i believe.

what sort of cooling are you planning on using on your rig?

I was wondering the same thing. I wanted to build a DDR800 rig, but I wanted to know what components I needed that wouldn't require the purchase of an EE processor.

So basically, the best mobo to support high FSB, the best CPU in the less-than-or-equal-to 500 dollar category, and which can hit DDR800, or FSB at 300 Mhz with water.

at 300FSB you would be hitting 4200Mhz @ 14x multi which would be extremely difficult for a P4 520.

i think the 550 can adjust the multiplier downwards from 14-12 i think, not sure on that though or which boards support it.

also @ 300FSB you would need to run a 3:4 divider to get the memory @ DDR800, and also loose timings to do that, so 300FSB 1:1 with tighter timings would be a better option.

the DFI, the Asus and the Abit will all pretty much do 300FSB, watercooling the northbridge would be advisable though.

My problem is the current P5AD2-E that I have now can hit 4.3 on air no problem with an 18 multiplier. But can't do so with a 14 multiplier with the same processor (560, with 14 and 18 multi as an option) because I can' seem to get past 280 on the FSB.

stock P5AD2-E is good to go to 360mhz FSB. Watercooling it made it stable at 365mhz FSB.
