Thumbs down Dell Nixes AMD, Again

    http://www.xtremesystems.org/modules...rder=0&thold=0

Quite frankly I was just waiting to hear this response. Dell is IMHO just a mass-production house, they get fantastic deals from Intel on everything. I wouldn't be surprised if Dell's hints were for the sole purpose of getting a better price on Intel chips, and made Intel realize they needed 64-bit x86 extensions to remain competitive.

    Thoughts?

I'm borrowing a friend's dell while I get the stuff together for my new desktop, and he has another dell. I've got this one working, but the new one is a piece(Happens with mass production I guess).

You have to remember though, Dell is in the business to make a profit first, satisfy customers' requests second. If customers want AMD based products(which most Dell users don't know the difference, for desktops anyways, servers are different), but what does Dell care if they can get an Intel chip that is "as fast"(cough) as an AMD chip for 2/3rds of the cost. You figure if they save 20 dollars a processor on 100,000 orders that is 2 million dollars saved.

The only reason I'm bothered is that Dell's adoption of AMD would make them more competitive, which would be good for the market in general (competition drives prices down and promotes innovation).

Bit irked as Dell is trend setter and it could have been good chance for AMD to really grow up and remain in CPU market. Back to same old hole where we never know where AMD is really going. Remember Cyrix, etc? Market acceptance is the key to survival and Dell do have big chunk.

Dell and Intel seem to go together like peas and carrots, or lamb and tuna fish, or spaghetti and meat ball. I dont think dell will ever consider AMD in a serious way because they have been using Intel forever and it seems to be working nicely for them, their popularity is through the roof, everyone and their mom has a dell

Could you imagine an AMD 64 Dell. That would be a nightmare for Intel.

well no perhaps thats not the point, but i'm sure in the world of big business if dell could buy amd's cheaper than intels then they would cos all there bothered about is big profit, but its a dog eat dog world and intel must be offering something more than amd, now i'm not accusing dell of taking bribes or anything but somethings going on as everyone knows amd's are cheaper than intel on the retail market

i know 2 people with dells and i know the hopsital where i live is switching back to them, ive used both of them and they are terrible (both 2.6 with 512mb ram and onboard gfx) my old 2600 ran rings around them. (also 512mb ram but with gf3ti200) why do dell not see that amd are producing cpus that are generally better than the intel equvielent, are cheaper and have more people wanting them?

what dell really needs to do is stop using integrated graphics, it kills part of your memory and hogs your cpu cycles too

Its not bad though, excepth the DELL cases have as much cool air ventilation as a space shuttle entering the earth's atmosphere at 20,000 C
