another Ford Family here
my actual car
'93 Merc Sable 3.8L V6 140HP 216ft-lbs stock
just put in a SONY XPLOD cd player for aux input, 4x 52W channels using my stock premium sound speakers. 211k on it and recently replaced (in the last ~2 years) gas tank straps, front disks/pads, brake lines, heater core, radiator, thermostat, starter, sparkplugs, both side running boards, struts and the only rust on the body (aside from the running boards) that has been touched up is a bit above the rear tires, other than that and the suspension/gas tank straps the car hasnt rusted at all in the 17 years we've been running it- currently a 300mi/week commuter
parents cars i drive if mines broked
5.4L Triton 2000 F150 w/260k currently
2007 3.0L (I Think) V6 Merc Milan w/46k currently, dual exhaust in the back (one pipe on each side, not one pipe branching to two at the tailpipe like most are)
my brother has a bunch of old stuff
he has (thinking....) '78 Bronco w/a 390, the '86 F150 w/a 460 above, the white '62 above, '78 F150, '97 probe i think he still has, and he has an NA '93 Eclipse he put a turbo in and converted to flip headlights from a talon
and my dads old toy:
1930 Model A 5-window tudor cloth top, been in a garage since '82, just gave it a bath for the first time a couple weeks ago

figured you'd chime in
basically i've had to fix something on the sable every 2-3weeks since i started school again, and everything i've had to fix so far is frightening while having to drive an hour home (gas tank strap broke w/13Gal in the tank, just replaced a front tire friday because a belt broke so the steel was poking through and the tread partly ripped off, and before the tank strap the brake lines went so i had no braking power except when the pedal was 1/2" from the floor). but the car is practically new again at this point haha
the sable is a damn nice car though, full digital tach and readouts, calculates miles remaining in your gas tank, gives you a warning if you have a headlight out, power seats w/ lumbar, keypad entry (LOVE the keypad), single stage metallic paint, outside temp sensor, and has nice torque too (but you have to consider it's heeaaavy)

I know what you mean, I have the same engine in my equally heavy Thunderbird (in my sig). I like the way the 3.8L sounds under full throttle.
All those options are awesome, I wish I had them on my old 'bird.
What you understand about cars is something that most people dont. If you replace everything that breaks on the car around 200,000 miles (usually when it breaks), the car is basically new and can go another 200,000 miles, rather than "oh well, the alternators broken, time for the junkyard..." Ive done the same thing with my 1989 F-150 Lariat 4x4 (around 180,000 miles) and am starting to do it with my 1989 Thunderbird (122,125 miles). Its not like vehicles have an expiration date, you treat them well they will last you a lifetime. I hate how people believe that cars are automatically no good anymore if they are 5 or 10 years old...
That Sable is in good shape too, especially for living in a rust area.

yeah, i mean it still may be destined for the junkyard soon, because the only things we havn't replaced would be the automatic tranny and motor lol
the transmission is what worries me (and the motor mounts...)
yeah its funny seeing cars newer than mine with rust all around the fenders or the clearcoat flaking off, even all the other '90s sables around town are rusted a lot, just having a garage, washing and waxing makes all the difference in the world
and, that Thunderbird's just a baby! less than 125k haha

Haha. I sure hope a car in that shape can steer clear of the junkyard. I replaced the motor mounts on my Thunderbird and they were straight forward and the mounts were only $38/ea from Napa, instead of $300/ea from Ford. Yours might be different since your car is front wheel drive. The transmissions are definitely a weak point on our cars, I'm planning a 5 speed swap when mine goes out. You probably have less options since its front wheel drive. Just keep everything maintained and your car will last a long time.
Im seeing fewer and fewer Thunderbirds like mine on the road, and less 80-96 trucks too. The local junkyards are getting full of them, its pretty sad.
My Thunderbird had 118,000 when I bought it last year, the original owner was an old lady who bought it new and drove it until 2008 when she died. The car was given to her daughter and sat in her driveway for like a year, when I saw it and bought it for $750.
