    Brazing rods bad quality?

I was trying to braze together some bronze today so I could get some practice brazing before my rparts shipment comes in. Well, propane and not even MAPP could get the rods to melt, and the metal was definatly hot enough. I got these cheap pre fluxed brazing rods, should I get something more expensive with a higher silver content (about 4 times as expensive) or am I not doing something right?

What kind of torch you using?

I found that with a poor torch (one made for propane) I couldn't melt a rod even with MAPP. Once I got a torch made just for MAPP, and with the same tank + rods, they melt in seconds. It could be that your torch just sucks.

When I said not even MAPP, I meant that MAPP was hotter than propane. Any yes, my torch sucks, it's made for propane. If I get a new torch will I need MAPP/oxy or is just MAPP ok? Keep in mind that I'm on a budget here.

i have a few of those cheap white fluxed rods that ya got, they are in the plumbing section i bet, they take ages to melt and at a hotter temperature (if they are the same as i have, good to use on steel and copPer though with enough heat.
try some brown tip 15% solder rods.

just the map gas torch is needed, no oxgen required, thats what i do all my brazing and a few other members, does the job fine and is the cheapest option.
no need to use lots of oxygen.
the map gas torch has a spiral path in the nozel for a hotter flame, you wont even need it to be at the hottest temp to braze copper pipes.
with a gas oven you can even do dd evaps piece of cake.

You mean with a propane camping stove? I use that makes the entire thing heat up a lot faster, because of the mass and it keeps the temp better once its up to temp.

The first is hotter, the second probably doesnt have the right oriface for mapp. The first will use a lot of O2 and they charge the same for that as they do for mapp gass.

I got mine for $40 off amazon. Its a nice torch, brazes well, and its a lot easier to work with then my old propane, even when using propane fuel.

Also, don't buy a torch that uses O2 if you want to save money. That stuff is as expensive per tank as MAPP, but you get like 1/10th as much per tank.
