    Lapping GPU / CPU _cores_?!

Wha? I've heard of lapping heatsinks... but lapping the core? This guide shows a big improvement. Would anyone consider lapping their GPU / CPU core for 5C temp decrease?

I think I would.. but then we get no shiny 'nVidia' or 'ATI' logos on our cores, just copper

    Any thoughts on this?

Looks handy... but such core destruction

I would never lap my cpu or gpu core the same way as a conventional lap. I have used jewelers rouge with a softwheel on an XP 3200+ core. After polishing both the core and the lapped Volcano 9 temps never went over 105F at 1.9vcore and 2530mhz

I have done it on a couple vid cards in the past. But would not try doing it with the newer flip chip designs. The old cores that had a large surface area (like the one shown) all tended to have raised corners and you could get a decent improvement with temps. With the newer smaller cores I would believe that they are flatter and since they are quite a bit smaller it would be real difficult to get flat and I could see doing far more harm than good. Same goes for CPU cores.

If it has an IHS you can get away with decent lapping, but if it is die like Athlon XP, rouge it, or leave it alone IMO

I lapped my 8500 way back when and got a few more MHz out of it. Just stop when you see copper and you'll be fine

I lapped the IHS of my P4 2.8c. Got a few more fsb out of it. I was able to boot at 3.8ghz on air, but it wasn't stable...It was only stable to 3.7ghz on air. Water may have been different...but I didn't have a WC setup then either. Unfortunately I traded it off for a 3.0c...which will only do 3.6ghz stable on air... dumb move on my part
