    MSI K8n neo2 + 3000 (what COOLER?!)

bought the chip OEM w/ the mobo, arriving next tuesday.

So wondering what cooler I should get for it

Thermaltake XP-90? (i think) looks pretty decent, but is a bit overpriced compared to the bigger version, but I dont think that works with my mobo :E

When buying a cheap cooler, what do I need to look for? Cause none of them say socket 939, just socket 940.

Well I can get the SLK-948-U for £19 - edit, dang they're not in stock either!
the XP-90 is on there as well for £22, but unconfirmed shippment for 2nd Nov.

I use the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and the Thermalright XP90. They fit together perfectly! Plus your memory is cooled by being right under 1/2 of the heatsink. There is a TON of clearance on all sides and the memory can still be added or removed from ANY slot when it's installed.

I simply love the XP90...get it.

Great temps w-AS5 as well. Only 42C full load @ 2600MHz, 36C idle.

Yeah, the XP90 was a good choice. The only bad thing i can think of is the pressure you have to put on the chip to get the hooks in the retention clip.

eek that sounds a bit fiddly

I guess if I press down in a leveled out force, it wouldn't do it any harm

I use a Zalman copper 7000 series. It is a doddle to fit on and works fine.

It is a bit tricky to get on there, but it's well worth it. It's a fantastic HSF.

I'd like to know if the XP-120 fits. Now that the .90 AMDs are out I'm looking at this mobo and possibly a 3400.

I'm currently running a ThermalRight SLK-948U for now and it's a good hs. I also have a panflow 92mm on it and it's dead quiet putting out close to 60cfm. The xp-90 is a very good hs as well i'd get that for sure if your debating. Here's a pretty good guide on a few of the newer hsf combos out there for each socket: http://www.overclockers.com/articles373/

It says the database is not updated but every new hsf combo that comes in they add it to the list anyway

Ok guys, I'm sufficiently impressed by my purchase now. Should be coming tomorrow with board and chip on tuesday. Should have it up and running nicely by Friday. Will report back then

edit: btw how much as5 should I put on the chip? Small blob in the middle like intel procs?

yep sounds about right...maybe a bit more since these Athlon 64 cores are...big. I hate having to put presure on my heatsink...mainly since I'm using an Athlon XP. The POLO HS I've got is incredibly hard to install. I almost sent my scewdriver through the motherboard

quick reply needed, i am looking at the guide, i need to drip nail varnish remover onto the mobo to remove the old RM?

Im unsure of if I should do this, and if so could do with a better guide.
    Can't find one anywhere

nvm done dat, wasnt even glued down.

The board layout is great, however I'm far too tired to install it now. Will install tomorrow morning!

Fingers crossed I aint got a duff board.

Either dat or a duff chip, there was some condensation on the IHS! Cause it arrived on an extremely cold day. However there was no damp.
