Exclamation D²OL Project - START HERE! (links to ALL important threads)

Come join the Xtreme D²OL team in its fight to stay in the #1 position. We are very proud to be so involved in the Distributed Computing scene and staying atop in any project is a very difficult goal. With your help, we can do it. Now is the time to dedicate yourself to this cause and if you have any questions feel free to ask in the "Newbie Orientation" thread. We are all here to help.

"The Drug Design and Optimization Lab (D²OL)™ works to discover drug candidates against Anthrax, Smallpox, Ebola and SARS and other potentially devastating infectious diseases.

By simply downloading a no cost, non-intrusive software application, you can contribute the idle time available on your computer to emerging microbial diseases and other pathogens that significantly impact global health even when not connected to the Internet.

D²OL, was first to use computational methods to deploy targets against Anthrax, Smallpox and Ebola, and now is first to have a credible SARS target (A target conserved between pig and human coronovirus, the suspected virus behind SARS)."

Geeze... didn't notice you did that. We've been testing this project on-n-off for a little bit now and I went head over heals into it a week or so ago. If you want to join the DC team... that's fine. I don't want to step on anyone's toes either.

@saaya: No idea. I used to be able to get myself to that level of involvement but anymore... I just don't have the time.

How heavy on resources is this as my server only has 512mb now since I nabbed the 512mb module for my gaming rig. I found DF to be quite heavy. I run active directory and exchange on a 2003box. So its a bit low on memory.

You're looking at ~70k max. D2OL is the main program which takes up ~17k and that in turn spawns either DockWin.exe, which is ~53k, or GridWin.exe which is ~17k. Only one of these last two will be running at any given time so the whole D2OL project is either taking ~70k or ~34k when it's running.

This switching between the two is what gives the project a thumbs-down in regards to running it as a service. You can start it as one but as soon as it switches between the two spawned programs the service dies.

At any rate, after a few weeks of running it I haven't had any problems with the client. It seems like this project may just be a tad more demanding than Distributed Folding since I had to retard the o/c on one of my machines when I switched.

And I'm not 100% sure, but I think memory bandwidth helps in production. (at least on the Xeon rigs I'm running)

Jeff: Are you running four instances on your Xeon rigs? How do you go about running more than one instance?...just copy the install directory to another location?

Just so you know, I am going to change the image on the stats page to something more appropriate, I just need to dig up the PSD files.

Also, I currently have a working beta for the sigs, so hopefully that will be up this weekend.

If anyone wants to make a background for the sigs, it would be greatly appreciated. No limits on the dimensions or colors or anything, just try to keep the file size down (<15kb).

BTW, I see a number of you have joined the team, welcome!

You probably can just copy the directory but I installed it four times, changing the install directory through the setup program each time. (D2OL, D2OL2, D2OL3, D2OL4)

Running 4 instances at 2.8GHzx4 you should average 55-65 canidates per 6hr update. Which is pretty darn good compared to the 25-35 canidates per 6hrs I get with my 2.55GHz AMD A64 Clawhammer.

I always upload before shutting down just in case. I am not sure if it matters.

To upload, right click on the desktop icon and go to status. From there, click manual update.

Try them both for a few days and see which project you like the best.

Ditto.. my system seems to run slowly in this project tho, but wait untill i get my phasechange unit on my 64 then ill be set.

Fun interface, altho if you have the main window open it uses 50% cpu to run the java, so might want to get it in the taskbar as much as possible.

    Thanks for your opinion.

I think we really need a project like that after the troubles with DF.
