    Overclockin a P4P800

    My bios settings are
Spread spectum and USB legacy are disabled
    Vdimm=2.85, Vcore=1.6, Vagp=1.6
    memory at 5:4

I've have my P4 2.8c at FSB at 230 but when I try FSB235 I get errors in prime 95 after 2 minutes, also if I use a vcore of <1.6 it freezes.

I think it is the processors limit but as this is my first attempt at overclocking I'm not too sure, any suggestions?

    51c on load

What type of memory do you have, and what does your VCore do under load?

I have 2xDDR400 256meg twinmos and 2xDDR400 256meg infinion, timings are 2.5,3,3,6 and it doesn't help if I relax them

I tried a vcore of 1.675 there, at idle it read 1.69 and load was 1.58 which ran prime for 5 minutes, slightly more than before. I suspect the droop is causeing the errors but I dont have enough soldering experience to do the droop mod

Sounds like the droop is it. Not many ways around it without a mod. You could try an even higher VCore if you feel comfortable with it. Eventually you could get it high enough to avoid drooping below the volts your cpu needs for that speed.

You can also try just 2 matched sticks of memory to eliminate that as a problem, but I had 4 (matched) in my P4C800 without any problems so that's probably not it.

I had my twinmos matched pairs first and could reach the same FSB at 1:1, and got the same problem. Pretty damn good for DDR400 imo

For testing purposes, what cpu temp should I not go above? I know that my board reads low for the cpu temp, about 6 degrees C

Sounds like the droop problem to me, my board has the same problem. 1.725v in BIOS is 1.808 in windows and 1.68 under load. For some reason, the droop mod did nothing for me though .

I've tried 1.7 vcore and it ran for a couple more minutes before I got an error. It's getting a bit hot though, 55c CPU 44 mobo using MBM and goes from 1.72 down to 1.6vcore.

The P4P800 droops like 0.05v, the P4C800 droops like 0.096v

So it shouldn't really be a droop problem.

Most DDR400 won't do past 230Mhz, did you try using a divider?

51c load is also pretty high. I'm guessing you're using air cooling. What heatsink/fan?

Well my P4P800 is drooping by 0.12v at FSB235 and yes I am using a 5:4 divider

I have a Q-tec enhanced HSF(lapped and silver compound) running at 3630rpm and it is suprisingly quiet and 3x80mm case fans.

I also got rid of that pink goo under the nothbridge, lapped it and put silver compound on. I haven't done anything else to the board appart from that.

I changed the side pannel fan to a 120mm inlet tonight, my temps are sorted but no help on the OC'ing front.
29 CPU, 25 Mobo at idle and gets up to 45 CPU, 29 mobo at FSB235 before I get errors in prime

    That's a huge droop, my old P4P800 droops 0.05v

And 50C on asus boards are kinda high since they tend to report lower temperature than any other boards.

I raised the vcore to 1.725 and now passes prime for 28 mins with no errors but it's was a bit hot so I stopped it.

What heatsink should I get? It's got to be reasonably quiet and be of a clip on type, I don't want to have to take the mobo out.

    Thermalright XP120 w/ 120mm fan or XP90 w/ 92mm fan.

They both use the clip design, and you'll probably find 92mm and 120mm MUCH less whiny than a 80mm.

Thanks thephenom, I was looking at the XP90 but I might get the XP120 if I can find one. Are they out in the UK?
