    3700EB Plat vs. PC3500 BH-5

Alright, I've started recieving parts for my S939 FX-53 build, and I'm in love already. I do have one last question, if anyone can answer it for me...I would greatly appreciate it.

I was gonna use my Mushkin LvLII PC3500 BH-5, since it will do such tight timings. Everyone has been telling me to ditch the Mushkin and go with 512MB (2x256) OCZ PC3700EB Platnium.

Would the system perform better with the EB RAM? NewEgg has the 512MB kit for around $200, so it's not that much if it will help the system. If the system would work better, I'll sell my BH-5 and go for the EB.

I've been having the same dilemma myself. The EB looks more and more temping every day. My BH-5 is fine for current purposes but I plan on getting a 939 rig later this year, and I'm having concerns about compatibility. Seems like I've been seeing bh-5 not playing nicely with the 939 boards.

Me too. My BH-5 performs great, but I want to get what's best for the rig. I've got a couple sets of BH-5, so letting one go wouldn't hurt.

    check the a64 (3000+?) review on lostcircuits.com

they compared bh5 and eb memory, and the eb at 2.5-2-2 performs better than bh5 at 2.0-2-2 !!!

    The BH-5 is for sale.

Hopefully it will sell soon, so that way I can go ahead and order some PC3700 EB.

I have both BH-5 and 3700EB and in the end it all depends on what you want to do, and how much voltage you can give your mem. BH-5 plays nice with 939 boards. I've got 240x12.5@1/1 out of my A8V, but only the gigabyte can give the BH-5 the voltage it needs to run up at 270+HTT@1/1.
The A8V and is it the K8V? you really can't give any voltage so the EB plays nice as I've hit 265HTT@1/1 and my every day clocks are 256x11.5@1/1 with the EB
I think the FX needs a gig of mem to run at it's best, but I really can't tell as my BH-5 is 256

yeah it defiently seems that the EB is the way to go for A64 since it can do such good FSB while keeping like 2.5-2-2 timmings. im still waiting to so how the ballistix, XL and mushkin's new line play the game.

bh5 is better if you use alot of volts. for no mods the eb will do like 250fsb at ras-cas of 3 and like 225 at 2.

Naah didn't like mine at all... Good for pure fsb yes but timings sucked. Didn't care for voltage either.

    Really? which timings?
BTW Do you think I can buy 1x512Mb of Corsair's Value it'll work well with my 2.6Ghz A64 24/7 (HTT is 260, Timings are 3-2-2-5).

    "(Orig. message to OCZ)

Dear Shawn, just got my eb3700. I went for the 37 instead of the 35. It's awesome! There are rumors on a few forums saying ocz discontinued the EB DDR series. Is this true? if it is, then why? I thought this was your best ram?
    please let me know.
    warm regards,
    alvin hayek

We didn't discontinue by choice, we had to stop because it is too hard to make. Micron stopped producing the ICs we needed to make the EB memory, so we can no longer make it.

    Sincerely,
    Sean Sinha"

Crucial (basically = Micron) has started its own performance memory line - Ballistix. Maybe that's why they "suddenly" do not have the IC's for OCZ anymore

If that's true, and ballistix proves to be as good as eb, you should be kissing Crucial's ass, because the ballistix is a good $100+ less for a gig than 3700EB was.

Personally I doubt it's why Crucial isn't selling OCZ the chips for EB anymore. My guess is Crucial is on another revision of chips now.

Hmm... If its a hundred bux cheaper that has a reason, usually less quality... Reviews anyone?

I think it's just standard crucial with a Heatspreader and tighter spd timings. But that's just my guess.

I don't think crucial decided to cut out the middleman (ocz) as Mrlobber suggested.

pfft... only thing EB really has on BH5 is the less volts. As old and played out as it is... it still owns. DOnt get me wrong, I recommend EB and was going to try some down the road.... still want to though you guys are saying I might not have the oppurtunity. My only point is I don't get you guys sometimes. We're talking about the two best rams as far as I'm concerned. But 3700EB costs close to $400 bucks as opposed to the legend sitting right in his hands. (edit: sorry, thinking of 1GB). That to me is enough to sway the choice on an otherwise tough decision.

Want to try something new then say so. I can relate with that. But all the well BH5 isn't available arguments fly out the window in this case and it does seem like the BH5 has to have it's bags packed for departure in order for the EB come in. Not advisable... grass is always greener on the other side scenario to me.

edit: Holy crap and I didnt notice we are talking of a P4 setup. You have no real volt concerns post mods and EB got it's rep from A64 rigs. Stop the insanity man! Keep the BH5. These folks will have you buying new gear monthly!
