AMD fanboy switches to intel... what proc to buy?

I must admit I've always supported AMD because of their powerful yet amazingly cheap processors, but now I've won a i845e chipset mobo in a contest and I think it's a good time to switch to intel. I'm not very up-to-date so i don't really know which proc i should get. I'm currently working on a 486 DX100 so i will not wait until the next pricedrop.

I'm on a strict budget (looking for best bang for the buck below 300$), so don't advice me a 2.8B proc.

C1 stepping processors seem to be to expensive (haven't found one for less than 500$ here in europe), so I'm doubting between these two:

P4 2.4B 533FSB, 250$
P4 2.533B 533FSB, 300$

I can't find a 2.23B proc for less than 250$, so I asume it would be a better buy to get a 2.4B?

I would couple it with a MSI 845E mobo (won in a contest, best casemod ) and a stick of samsung PC2700 512MB. I've got a very decent watercooling rig, so I hope to achieve 18*170 (3060Mhz). Sounds possible to you guys?

Another question, I've got a DD chipsetcooler which I used to cool my kt266A chipset with, but this i845e chipset seems to be without heatspreader (afraid to crush it) and no mounting holes (nforce-like clip system). Any idea's how to attach a waterblock on a i845e northbridge??

2.4B might be a good choice. I have one that ran nicely at 3100 Mhz, 1.75V. This was with a bongcooled Maze 3 system.
Now, with the prometeia, it runs nicely at 3321Mhz, 1.75V.
It's a bit luck of the draw, some 2.4B will go high and some won't. Same for the 2.53. JC once had a good one, did 3100Mhz on air, if I remember correctly

I have a maze 3 here from DD on my IT7, it the same as the AMD block except the lucite top overlaps the copper...Same as an AMD in every way apart from the size of the block. I have heard that the 2.4bs don't OC very well, but then again there are instances like JUpiler who pulled off 3.1. I puled of 3.1 with my 2.26B on straight water, and becuase 2.26B has a lower multiplier, that means higher FSB, better memory bandwidth.

Mmm... I've heard some contradicting stuff of the 2.4b, some say they're superb overclockers, some say they're not. Luckely they're already fast at stock speed.

About the waterblock: I've made a plexi top to make my D-tek spiral fit on a P4 system, no problems there, but I want to make my DD chipset cooler fit on my northbridge too. I can't glue it on (with as adhesive) because the i845 chipset seems to have no heatspreader. And can't attach it with bolts neither, because of the clip-system (like with n-force mobo's) there are no holes surrounding the northbridge.

I would say 2.26B, but because 2.4B procs can be purchased for the same price, it doesn't make sense to get a 2.26B.

Attaching the waterblock is easy, just get some acrylic and cut out some holes for the barbs, and then 4 holes for the mobo and rest it on top of the block and screw it down.

There are no 4 holes for the mobo, that's the problem.

:\ I thought you were talking about watercooling the cpu, and you had to change your method. That's what I was refering to. The northbridge w/ those damn hooks--That's tricky, I actually have someone designing a block for me that will work on that. Because I am having the same problem, how to latch it down.

Yup, seems to be very tricky.

I don't think the northbridge will actually benefit from being watercooled, but I'm trying to have a fanless system and the last thing I need is a loud 40mm fan. :/

Allright! I toyed around with some plexi and managed to securely attach a waterblock on a i845e chipset!

The holder (in twofold):


Prepared the chipset with some mouse to protect it from cruching:


Drilled the holes in my DD chipset block a little deeper, otherwise the nylon bolthead prevented the waterblock to make actual contact with the chipset:

it does make sense. 2.26B uses lower multiplier and lower multiplier gives you bigger chance of hitting higher fsb.

Yep spot on, that's why I chose this 2.26B.

Well I understand that, but the 2.4B has more headroom, and then in the end you might end up w/ about the same FSB.
