    The DI addative thread

This is where we all can discuss what we use to better cool the DI.

99% Isopropyl Alcohol - best cheap addative, can be bought in a drug store.

Ethanol - Requires a license to buy in high contents. Usually above 90, but is THE best addative.

Everclear - 95% grain alcohol that might as well be ethanol. Not legal in some states, but is an excellent addative if obtainable.

Bacardi 151 - 80% grain alcohol which is alot easier to find then everclear. This is my personal favorite addative as it's good for a little Nip and to keep the DI cool

Moonshine - 100% grain alcohol. Not legal in any state in the US, but I have heard you can make it. Would probably be the best addative, but shame it's almost impossible to find.

Anyone else has anything to add feel free. Later

You don't need a licence for denatured ethanol do you? I use to buy drums of that stuff for manufacturing epoxies. 'Think it was less than $2.00 a gallon in volume.

Well I think it's usually in a copper container anyway Should be ok i think? so long as you don't spill it on the insulation.

I'd just stick with the other stuff. Besides, where would you get acetone? I'm sorry, but I'm guessing it's in something common? But if you really need something easy to get and cheap Isopropyl alcohol is the best addative.

They have acetone at my local hardware store (which suprises me, since I live in a small town), so I'd imagine any Homedepot/Lowes/whatever would carry it.

So Everclear will work? There is some at "Party Source" a store right across the Ohio river from me in Kentucky... It's only $15 a bottle (large bottle... forget the size but its bigger than a 40)... I was thinkin about getting it to use with dry ice as a joke but I may look into it more now

looks like it's time to make a trip over to Kentucky then

Not only does Kentucky allow any and every type of alcohol, compared to Ohio prices, it's dirt cheap

Here's some stuff that I found at the paint section of a hardware shop near my place:

    denature alcohol - pure
    acetone - extra strength
    xylol - xylene
    methylated spirit

Which one should I use with DI?

bh2k above said that acetone "eats insulation"? Whats that?

I used Cat 4.6 for the benchies. Didn't try 4.7 because I sold the card before it was released. Eyeing the real XT-PE right now

Denatured alcohol is fine as long as it's a high grade of alcohol 90+

If you spill some of the acetone on the insulation it will "eat" pieces out of it.
I use also acetone..never had a problem with the insulation as long you carefull with it throwing it in.
