R420 needs a lot of juice too...

The same as the NV40 it appears. Both cards will have dual molex plugs and possibly require the use of separate power rails... What does this mean? Well, not much to most of us who have beefy power supplies already. I'm wondering when nVidia and ATI will put an external power connector on the cards and provide a dedicated power supply for it. Anyone remember the 3DFX Voodoo5 6000 ?????

    Here is some LINKAGE

Especially if it's true that each connector will require a separate rail with nothing else on it. They almost need to include an external power supply with the cards. Either that or offer an Antec 450watt+ power supply with the cards LOL.....

I'm also wondering how this will affect overclocking. If I'm not mistaken, don't most power supplies only have two rails on the +12v side? If that's the case, then how is the rest of your system going to be affected?

oh this is going to put alot of people off. ati would be smart to only require one molex connector, then alot of guys will flock to ati. a new psu is quite a hassle and a high end psu isnt cheap too. Video cards cant keep going on that way, whats next? its own power supply? water cooling? I will tolerate none of this and neither will many others, especially seeing the midrange cards offer ample power without the burden

for the first time i agree with u. Im not a 3d01 addict and will take the card that can run games with everything up whether it be the best or not. If 2 molex connectors are required i will not be getting. shame shame on these corps.

maybe the 8 pipe one might only require 1 molex, since half of the cores been disabled, it should suck quite a bit less power. dont count on modding, ati is gonna prevent this on a hardware level and dont be supprised if they are clock locked too. no ocing

I doubt they will need it, and the only PSU's I know of that have dual rails for the +12v rail are FSP PSU's.

    What about the PCI-Express Edition.
Isn't the PCI-Express gonna be able to give more jucie to the 3d cards?

For Intel it is, considering Intel has already done away with AGP 8X for LGA775 (Socket T) except in value boards that use the i865PE/ICH5 Chipset - and I'm sure relatively few people here would buy one of them. The only option left for those with LGA775 (Socket T) would be to purchase a dual (AGP/PCI-e) motherboard with a Via or possibly SiS chipset.

Depends how many people buy LGA775 boards AT ALL.

The socket is so flimsy (the "pin" contact points) its rediculous.

PCI Express is supposed to incorporate something like 25 Amps on its connector. This is why video card manf are pushing for it to come out so they can remove the silly molex connectors.

I dont think anyone anticipated AGP to be around this long.

I highly doubt ATI will lock the speeds considering one of the big features of their Catalyst drivers is the Overdrive feature.
