    I think I smoked my 9800np...

Well yesterday I set my A6 rig up and I cleaned my 9800np off with isopropyal alcohol and put my stock Ti200 heatsink back on and put an 80MM fan blowing on it. I apparently dont need a new CD key for win XP so I just fired it up and I got multi colored checkerboards everwhere. I know I got into the BIOS so I'm assuming its the video card right?

That thing cost me 250 dollars and I never even OCed it It had some awesome 3.3ns sammy ram and was flashable to

Is it dead or is there something wrong with this stupid chaintech board? I had to look in the manuel to get the start button connector on because the boards not maked and the BIOS section lists almost nothing and it says "press Delete to get into BIOS. Press Delete after the PENTIUM 4! logo shows. I'm never buying a chaintech product again unless it preforms 100% oppasit(sp?) of the manuel.

yep, it sounds dead to me.

    That sucks uber bad.

Sorry to hear about it. It probably isn't the board.

Look on the bright side, you can pick up a refurbished 9800pro from newegg for $169 right now.

it might not be dead. i had that happen to mine when i hooked up the mcw50 on it.
all i saw was 16 bit colours. and sometimes it wouldn't boot.
so i sent it back to the guy i got it from and it didn't work for him either. then he rechecked it about a week later and it was fine and dandy. but i got a replacement anyway.
so just hold on to it and try it again later.

Checkerboards mean shorting usually. I'd go over the whole damn thing with 99% isopro and then make sure its bone dry. Use a nonconductive paste (NO AS) and stock heatsink and see if it works.

I've gotten several "dead" refurb 9800's from newegg that had too much as3 on them and were fixed with a good cleaning.

I wouldn't submerge it. Or clean it with alchohol for that matter. I used alchohol on my old Mega Drive and it broke it.

I already cleaned the whole damn thing with isopropyal alcohol 99% before I put the heatsink on. Theres a metal nut thing holding the bolt for the HS on. Could that be an issue?

I cleaned of a 9800 Pro with alcohol after I got some squares with diffrent coulours on it... It happend after I got some water on it, but it looked like it was dry. Poured alcohol over it and blew compressed air on it, then into the oven at 50C for 15 minutes... works like a charm now....

I have done it. Alcohol mixed with water. It doesn't really accomplish too much, especcialy if you're trying to get excess paste off. I would try your card again with the stock heatsink.

My an50r died for a couple of days and now works great. When I was going to take it to rma, I cleaned up completely using methanol 99%, probably that was the reason to make it come back to life. Use a hairdryer to be completely sure it is dry.

i got the checkerboards after i set the cas latnecy on my 9800 to 1 cycle. maybe somebody else tried it and it happened for them and they just sent it back? long shot, but if you can boot into dos and flash it with the regular NP bios (which you should be able to do without seeing if you make your keystrokes carefully) it might work.
I used to have links here demonstrating how awesome I am, but it's been so long that they're not very relevant (and the pictures have disappeared), so I guess I'll have to get working on new stuff.

I have been using the card for a while untill I got a dedicated gaming rig set up with my 9500pro. The 9800 was sitting on a table...

Are you sure a Ti200 heatsink will cool an R350? Are you sure that's not the problem?

ive put a Xabre200 in hot, nearly boiling water with dishsoap and toothbrused it to get Vaseline off.... since i used in chiller. it works just fine still. But keep in mind, cheap stuff doesnt seem to die, it just the expensive stuff you dont want to die that bites it

yea I killed an nf7s to but it was a piece of crap that wouldent do over 2.3ghz or 215 FSB

I was running the Ti200 heatsink with an 80MM fan blowing on it just like it is now for like a month fine. Temps were around 45C load.
