Nah, you're not nuts. I'm sure you don't hold the trigger the whole time you're soldering. I've used my Weller gun and just held the trigger 'til the solder started to melt and then let go. The tip seems to hold the heat nicely only requiring a tap of the trigger once in a while.
Damn how can you work with that piece, specially on small places. I never even considered using this type of Iron, because I would solder everything in the in the neighbourhood together.
I always use a 18W iron with a nice 1 mm tip.

bah, i got a cheap a$$ little pencil tip iron at Fry's for like 12 bucks, takes about 3 minutes to heat up, and has a sharp enough tip to puncture my skin quite easily (dont ask) I would think that a soldering beast like that would possibly damage SMD components on mobos or vid cards...i think i used to have one of those when i was a kid playing with soldering...i eventually used it for mechanical soldering, my kid version of welding

omg i have that exact same soldering iron, i dont use it anymore though i think the tip is busted, but anyways i like my 30watt pencil style MUCH better lol i would never bring one like that anywhere near my parts
I wouldn't use one of those for 'computer' soldering unless I was held at gunpoint, that thing is nuts.

Now...for R/C cars and soldering Ni-Cad and NI-MH battery packs together...that would be nice...but then again, the heat could destroy the cells if held for too long.
