Building a really budget system- need help

I'm trying to put together a nice budget system for my father as he currently uses a 400mhz p2 that is basicly a physical repersentation of the devil. He's been looking around at stuff for a while and I've talked to him about it a fair amount but the outcome is always, "that'd be nice, but I just don't have the money"
So my goal is to see if I can build a fairly fast system for less then 200 Canadian (shipped) and basicly give it to him. What I've got so far is

4x128mb of pc2100 that has no problem running pc3200
    1X200w Hipro powersupply
    2xGeneric/seanix atx cases
    1x120gb 8mb cache Maxtor drive
    2x30gb seagate drives
1xGeforce2 mx400 (the 299/229 one in my sig)

So as long as stock cooling is sufficient for whatever amd cpu is bought all I should need is the mobo and processor. I've searched around and the lowest price I've gotten was for a 2500+ and an a7n8x was $230, and since they're local theres no shipping. Unfortunatly I really don't have that much, so I'd like to get as far below $200 as possible. I have heard of the applebred cpus doing really well, but I don't know where to find one in Canada.

I should also add that I've never built (or even used ) an amd for personal use.
So if you guys can give me a hand and suggest some motherboard/cpu setups that will preform well on air I would be really greatful.

Ah, I just checked NCIX.com and I can get an NF7 and a 1.6ghz duron for 175+shipping and tax. Would this be a good combo and is there anyway I can be even cheaper?

Try the search engines at pricenetwork and redflagdeals. Also check out vibe computers and canada computers. Vibe is the best dealer in canada and gets all of my business. Their duron was 59 bucks the other day but i think its out

Those durons are awesome! I killed mine, but Im thinking of buying a new one cause I liked it more than my 2500 I have now. You could try getting a cheaper mobo if you want. Just make sure it is nforce or kt600 (preferably nforce2) and it should work fine cause your not going to super oc this or anything.

i would buy a duron 1400 mhz or so
and the cheapest nforce2 i could find ; and overclock it to 2000mhz. , doesn't need expensive cooling.

    edit ; pc2100 ram thats runs @ pc3200
    is this correct ?

Not sure if they ship to Canada (call them at 1-888-314-1126 to find out), but check out dumpinggoods.com

    NF7-S refurb at $45, http://www.dumpinggoods.com/dumpingg...D0009&cc=&tpc=

Lots of other makes and models too.

They have AMD processors from $38 on up (Athlon 1.33 for $38 however).
The plural of "anecdote" is not "data."

Newegg does not ship to Canada.

I'm not going with the via c3 because while I want something budget, I want something that preforms and will last a while (as in before it becomes obsolete)

For the rma board, thats a really good deal! I would prefer not to get an rma'd abit board though. I sent my board in for an rma, the board they sent back has one of the ram slots sticking a bit out of the board and because of that I cannot utilize all 4 slots and I don't want to spend another month+ doing another rma.

Bonbon, yes that is correct. Heres a pick to back it.

A member of the forum contacted me by pm and gave me an offer on an nf7 and a 2500+ so I'm probably going to go with that, just gotta get some funds together.

    Thanks for the help guys
