In a small container add a bunch of elmers white glue to the BB's stir around then plop them in the bottom of tube, instant mass! Go light on the glue it's prob a heat insulator!

How thick do you make the layer in the bottom of tube? Do you apply thermal paste or anything to these between tube and CPU?

Yea, deffinitly thermal paste. "Cermaique" is suggested because it scales better with cold temps. The thickness of the bottom layer of the tube is a fairly debateable discussion, but most people are using something around 1/2" or smaller. I personlly would avoid anything under 1/8, as you'd get mad temp swings.
