    Deepcool AK620

    Introduction

    DeepCool, a global brand and manufacturer of computer hardware and peripherals for enthusiasts is revamping its PC component line-up with the introduction of the new very sleek looking AK620 dual-tower CPU cooler. A precision-machined convex base and six heat pipes that run along two high-density fin-stacks help the AK620 outperform with 260W of heat dissipation power. The cooler comes with two DeepCool FT120 PWM fans with fluid dynamic bearings for longevity and is ready to cool the most demanding CPUs.



    In terms of CPU sockets, the Deepcool AK620 is compatible with Intel’s LGA 1700, GA 2066/2011-v3/2011/1200/1151/1150/1155 and AMD’s TRX4, AM4/AM3+/AM3/AM2+/AM2/FM2+/FM2/FM1, covering almost all current scenarios.




    Packaging & Contents

    Deepcool AK620 arrived in a brown cardboard box enclosed in a white shell case with a picture of the cooler and the model name. On top there is a small cover that does not completely close the package, but for better fastening it is fixed with a pair of transparent stickers.



    On the back of this extra layer of packaging, you'll find detailed specifications for the cooler. On the left, in several languages, we are sent to the manufacturer's website. The cooler is made in China and comes with a two-year warranty.



    Inside the cardboard box the cooler is securely fixed between two polyethylene foam inserts, and a flat box with accessories provides additional protection from its upper end.



    It contains a metal universal backplate, two sets of rails, screws, bushings and nuts for AMD and Intel, a thermal compound as well as an L-shaped screwdriver for installing the cooler and a Y-splitter for fans.

    A Closer Look

    Deepcool AK620 is a classic tower cooler with a two-section heatsink and two fans. The Deepcool AK620 comes in at a net weight of 1,456 grams with dimensions of 127 × 110 × 157 millimeters for the heatsink alone and 129 × 138 × 160 millimeters with fans as well as covers.



    The front and rear surfaces of the heat sink have an uneven shape. Each section has 45 aluminum plates with dimensions of 127 × 40 mm and another 5 narrow plates with dimensions of 127 × 27 mm (for compatibility with RAM modules equipped with heatsinks). The thickness of the plates is 0.4 mm, and their contact with the tubes is ensured by simple crimping, which is not typical for air coolers that claim to have the prefix "super-" in the name. The calculated area of ​​the radiator is 9,690 cm 2 - a good value.



    Deepcool AK620 is equipped with two proprietary 120 × 120 × 27 mm fans. They are 2 mm thicker than standard fans, not due to an increase in the thickness of the frame and impeller, but due to the presence of rubber inserts in the corners. Fan model is Deepcool's FK120 (DF1202512CM), and they are made completely in black.



    The rotation speed of nine-bladed fan impellers is controlled by pulse-width modulation (PWM) in the range from 500 to 1850 rpm. The maximum airflow of a single fan can reach 69 CFM, the static pressure is 2.19 mm H 2 O, and the noise level is 28 dBA. Under the paper sticker of the stator containing information about the fan model and its electrical characteristics, there is a hydrodynamic bearing with a declared service life of at least 50 thousand hours, or more than 5.7 years of continuous operation.



    As for the electrical characteristics, they are quite standard for a 120mm fan. With the declared 1.44 W, one such fan consumed 1.49 W and could start at a voltage of 3.4 V. As mentioned above, rubber dampers are built into the corners of the fan frame.



    One fan is inserted between the sections, and the second is placed on one of the outer sections. The ends of the radiator plates on both sides are practically closed by the ends of the ribs bent down. Only small slots for the hooks of the fan brackets remained open.



    Since the radiator is absolutely symmetrical, the fans can be hung on the sections from either side, and a third “turntable” can also be added if the need arises.



    Coming to the design and aesthetics, the DeepCool AK620 comes with a stylish cover on the top of the two heatsink towers which features a mesh layout and the new DeepCool logo. The covers are removed without the use of tools, and under them are the plastic pad holders screwed to the plates with screws.



    The design of the radiator involved six copper heat pipes fold in U-shape with a diameter of 6 mm. They are nickel-plated and penetrate the sections evenly along the central longitudinal axis. The heat sink is copper nickel-plated, the base is relatively flat, but there are traces of the cutter. The dimensions of the contact plate of the base are 42 × 39 mm.




    Installation Process

    Before starting the tests, you need to assemble the system. The whole procedure is very simple. First you need to install the mounting plate at the back.



    The screw position of the back plate can be changed. Just shift the position with a click.



    Secure the back plate with spacer screws.



    Attach the bridge plate and Fix the plate.



    Then it remains only to install the cooler and install the fans. Fix the AK620 with the fan removed with two screws.




    The AK620 supports RA module heights of 43mm when in its dual-fan configuration. Single-fan setups will support larger DRAM module heights of 59mm, though this will reduce airflow over the AK620's fin stacks, decreasing the cooler's performance.

    I am testing the performance as follows:

    Ambient temperatures are kept at 23C throughout my tests.
    The CPU Fan is set to 100% to eliminate inconsistencies as a result of PWM control.
    Idle temperatures are obtained after booting the PC and idling on the desktop for 30 minutes.
    Load temperatures are obtained after running Prime 95′s for 30 minutes.



    Performance

    Lets take a look at our temperature testing results under stock and overclocked conditions. All temperature charts are sorted with lowest load temperatures at the top. While loading on stock clock, the Deepcool AK620 did very well with a peak temperature of 54°C.



    Let’s see how the Deepcool AK620 holds up under overclocked conditions. Once we turn up the voltage and get the CPU set to 4.6GHz, the lower performance heatsinks begin to fall off and near the TDP. The AK620 and Noctua NH-D15S both keep neck and neck, with the NH-D15S topping out at 63 degrees, while the AK620 kept the CPU at 62 degrees. This is a pretty negligible performance difference and I’d consider the cooling performance between the AK620 and NH-D15S to be identica. The performance results achieved by the AK620 are simply amazing.



    We ran another test with our CPU overclocked to 4.8GHz and the AK620 is seen doing an impressive job as well in keeping the temperature in around 69°C. Beating NH-D15S, Fractal's Design Celsius S24 and Cryorig's A40 being 1°C ~ 3°C cooler, shows that the AK620 is a new contender that shouldn’t be taken lightly. The ability to perform better than 240MM AIO units on the market speaks volumes for the AK620. Keep in mind that the load temperatures we recorded under Prime 95 are a worse case scenario, as a system will never really reach the levels of stress put on by Prime 95 under normal usage.



    These fans at stock levels are some of the most silent fans I have used. Even with full power to the FK120 PWM fans, they are barely audible, and you have to be within a foot or two to even hear them. I had to take the reading a couple of times and I even changed the battery of the measuring device to be sure the 34dB rating I was getting was in fact correct for these fans. On the next page we’ll wrap this up and give our final words on the AK620.




    Final Thoughts

    The Deepcool AK620 is certainly one of the top air coolers on the market today. In terms of overall performance, it just ever so slightly edges out the Noctua NH-D15S. This is a cooler that can handle the most high-end processors running overclocked 24/7. Performance has a lot to do with many of the design features of the cooler like the dual aluminium fin stacks in a checkerboard pattern and solid nickel-plated copper that transfers heat to six 6-mm heat pipes. The PWM-controlled FK120 fans that Deepcool included with the AK620 are a major plus. These fans really suit the AK620 well, as they look classy, have high quality anti-vibration corners and most importantly of all, they move a ton of air while not being noisy in the least. At this point, it is basically down to splitting hairs when it comes to performance and noise levels. A thing that I was a little worried about when I first took a look at the cooler was how easy installation would be. Mainly because this is a pretty heavy cooler. Surprisingly installation was quite easy and went without a hitch. Many air coolers that are even smaller than this cooler are harder to install. Add to that some exceptional build quality and you really do have a premium offering. It doesn't have LED illumination, but the design isn't bad, and the heatsink top has a black grid design with the Deepcool logo quietly placed. In addition, the fan uses a flat frame that matches the heat sink top. It has a cube design with a sense of unity. Clearance isn’t looking good for tall memory modules, but moving up the fan on the memory slot side will pretty much fix this issue. So end users will be not severely limited on their memory options.
