I don't like the idea of the i7 series losing hyperthreading. It made sense to me that i5 were straight cores, i7 were HT cores, and i9 = more HT cores. This just seems to give Intel an excuse to charge more for what used to be previously a standard feature.
It may very well be 25% faster than the 2700k in some applications. But if the cost is significantly higher (also need to factor Intel motherboards tend to be more), then I don't see this affecting AMD's market share much. Those who want the best will always buy the best. Those who want value will still go for value.
They are flailing around trying to counter AMD. New names help sell old crap. By making i7s into i9s, everyone that has an i7 is now behind the e-p power curve. MUST BUY i9 NOW!
NVIDIA tried the same thing by rebranding old cards. Generally just creates confusion.
I really think getting rid of the 6 core HT was a mistake. 8700k is a great chip. Scaling the lineup with HT vs no HT doesn't make much sense unless i'm missing something. Does it help yields? If not, you're just selling the same chip for less...

Can we get the math right on this. The 8700k is about 25% slower and the 9900k is around 33% faster.
Do we know that they are doing that? I assumed that they were just getting rid of hyperthreading on the 8core i7 part. In the past the i5 was 2c4t or 4c4t, and right now the desktop i5 is 4c8t or 6c6t.
