It was only a matter of time before Intel maxed out the "Skylake-X" silicon on the client segment, by bringing its "Skylake XCC" (extreme core count) 700 mm? die on a client-segment package, and here we are. Without taking model names, Intel made it clear that it's launching a new client-segment 28-core/56-thread processor. The company didn't specify the processor's package, and we're doubtful if it's LGA2066 for the simple reason that the Skylake XCC die has 6-channel memory interface. Nevertheless, this processor is clocked at 2.70 GHz (nominal), and without revealing Turbo speeds, Intel managed to overclock it bench-stable to 5.00 GHz, at which it scored 7,334 nT Cinebench points. This product will launch in Q4-2018.

Well, that may look impressive on first glance.
But what it actually is ,is a panicked move by intel to counter TR2 32C show, this is a xeon platinum, unlocked, cooled by a monstrosity on a monstrosity motherboard with a monstrosity of a vrm. This thing ate probably 700W or more during the 5ghz CB run.It wasnt a planned cpu on a planned platform.
Yea, amd could not do this without LN2, but TR2 is a normal cpu on a normal mb that is gonna be on sale in few months.And this, is a rushed PR stunt, all over the sites there is a "5ghz 28C intel chip to be out in q4" which just isnt true.

The cheapest intel sells a 28 core for now is about $11k, I doubt it will be $3k. I would guess $5-6k to protect their xeons.

Is there even a viable market for a $10k prosumer/professional CPU? I suspect AMD's 32c CPU to significantly undercut that price.

Prolly is in some workstation apps that can really use cores/threads.
If TR1 costs about $1K then I would hazard a guess that TR2 will be around $2K.
Keep in mind that some applications license fee's can be more than the whole workstation. Some even charge on a core basis so that hurts both sides equally.

It really depends on workloads on which one is better.
TR can have issues with how SMT works, then Cache can screw things up when you start taking off with multi threaded apps.

Intel's 28-core HEDT CPU Demo Was Dishonest About Clock Speeds

Meh... I'm not impressed. When I first heard about this "5Ghz" 28 core CPU I knew it was overclocked, there is no way Intel can achieve such high clock speeds especially with a CPU with a high core count, not with current technology and certainly without using extreme cooling such as LN2.

Not to mention that the CPU was likely a Xeon CPU, and its not even going to be a consumer product. If Intel does bring this 28 core CPU to the consumer market, I expect it to be very pricey and expensive to manufacture. Do we really need high core CPU's with a premium price that very little people can afford, even from AMD as well?

It prolly took them 10 minutes to select a CPU and pop it into a machine and change the CPU ID and stats. Its the motherboard that took them awhile to make.
Also ES motherboards can be very large, the one shown was not a release board or even close to one.

Both of the boards shown (dominus and the GB one) are quick jobs on making the dual socket P SSI EEB boards into one socket, right? The asus one looked like a sage with some weird layout changes so they could use some of the same layout.
