    Question Best practice for backup NAS on HDD selection

    So currently I run two NASs:

    NAS1:
    24x HGST HUS724040ALS640 SAS HDDs
    FreeNAS 11.1-U2

    NAS2:
    Windows 7 w/ Drive Bender
    20x WD HDDs (various types and capacities between 1TB and 3TB, mostly Reds and Blacks and 1 or 2 Greens)

    Now I always knew that best practice was when having a backup NAS to have a different OS in case any updates or bugs affected your primary, they wouldn't affect the backup. But does the same hold true for HDDs? The HGSTs that I use are pretty darn reliable and have had no issues with them, so I wouldn't mind eventually replacing all the various ones in my backup with those if that's the consensus. But on the other hand, if there's some sort of inherit flaw with those drives, I would be infecting both NASs. Mind you, I have 60TB of stuff on my primary so reliability is of great concern (one reason why I went with HGST/WD).

    i'm using seagate surveillance hdd.
    i had a bad experience with hitachi death star. lol

    You can get all crazy worrying about these things. Some buy drives from different vendors, 2 from here, 2 from there, so they don't get all the same batches, etc.

    I would dump the WD Greens tho, they are not made for NAS setups. I also would not mix different drive types on the same NAS, stick with Reds for NAS's.

    But in the end its the Raid type that will save you. All drives can go out at some point, its the NAS/Raid software that will protect you in the end.

    Over the last 15 years or so, I've probably had over 100-150 HGST hard drives both of the desktop and enterprise variants and only TWO have died (because they were sitting right behind the heater vent, which caused them to prematurely die due to the elevated air temperatures coming from the heater).

    Other than that, I run HGST pretty much exclusively (even though, now I think they're a WD company anyways).

    They're not the fastest performing, but they last.

    I still have 500 GB hard drives from 10 years ago that are still going strong, and the only reason why they're still not in use is because I need more space (so I moved to HGST He10 10 TB drives).

    My current NAS systems (three out of four of them) are running HGST Deskstar NAS drives. (The last one is running Ultrastar He10 because at the time, 10 TB Deskstar NAS drives weren't available).

    I'm using three Qnaps and a Buffalo Linkstation for my NAS hosts.
