I had several pc's running window 7 pro (have the disk)that I updated to windows 10 with there free online update. My question is if I would format the HD and install windows 7 would I get a free windows 10 update or would I have to buy windows 10 ????

Windows 10 once installed and activated is tied to the machine.
If you want to reformat and fresh install just download the lastest version from MS and install. Do not enter a key and finish the whole process. When all finished head over to activate widows and it should activate just fine.
