[News] ASRock confirms Coffee Lake CPUs need new motherboards

    http://hexus.net/tech/news/mainboard...-motherboards/

We are seeing mixed signals concerning Intel's upcoming Coffee Lake processors, which will be built on the 14nm++ process. We thought it likely that the third range of CPUs built on 14nm, as part of Intel's new Process-Architecture-Optimisation (PAO) scheme, would be compatible with existing LGA1151 socket 100 and 200 series motherboards with BIOS support updates. However, a reply by ASRock to a user query concerning Coffee Lake CPU compatibility with its Z270 Supercarrier motherboard makes it pretty clear this will not be the case.

What else did people expect? It's Intel, new CPU means new chipset & socket.

Wow, I'm surprised. With a bios update, this would have been a no brainer for an upgrade. Making people buy a new MoBoard pretty much makes AMD's platform a competing option.

In today's world I think cpus are so fast that it's pushed the upgrade cylce to the point that people do entire new PC's rather than upgrade a couple for a small performance gain. With that in mind Intel probably prefers to sell a newer chipset in the system rather than an oem using an older (cheaper) chipset with a new processor and having OEM's market the new couch on the old platform. In essence, those buying new PC's from OEM's probably benefit from limited chipset selection, while hobbiests like us get the short end of the stick

Edit - CPU - not couch. Darn auto correct...
